    Eurotek online presentations ??

    Recording presentations at Eurotek

Many people have emailed to ask if the many seminars & presentations that are delivered at Eurotek ‘The Advanced Diving Conference’ of Europe are available on line or if they have been recorded.
The answer to this is no they have not and no they are not online. I had made this decision of not recording speakers and their presentations for several reasons.

The main one being that if Eurotek presentations become available on line then what would the incentive be for anyone to come to the next conference if they knew the presentations would be available on line after the event ??????

If no one came then I would not be able to pay for the speaker’s flights or accommodation so there would be no speakers let alone any ‘online presentations’.

That’s my honest and true belief, if I am missing something here or you think I am wrong then please tell me why.
I understand that some people for one reason or another may not be able to attend on the weekend of the conference, but that’s sometimes how it is. The dates are never going to suit everyone that’s life.

I used to go to the old Aquacorps Tek shows in the USA back in the days when Tek divers all knew each other. It was great, I learnt loads met people, saw developments in equipment in with my own eyes and had a good time. That’s what Eurotek is all about, a conference where people gather, listen to presentations, ask questions, exchange ideas and open doors to other adventures.

I’d like to know what people think. Am I seeing the entire picture here or am I missing something. Am I right in believing that Advanced Diving Conferences that are established like Eurotek and Oztek would die over night if it were all placed into a virtual online world.

Maybe I’m just old school and still living moment when Tek diving was in its hey day. ?

    Please tell me!

I'm 100% with you on this, Leigh.

There are plenty of places for folks to talk about the stuff that Eurotek covers and the presenters can and do publish their materials online. It's entirely fair for you to keep the shows themselves for the attendees alone.

What about having the presentations on a DVD available for purchase for those who could not attend? Perhaps the DVD-sale revenue from one year could help cover costs for speakers that following year? I guess that those who attend do it primarily to socialize and network and would keep coming regardless of the presentations being available later.

Had there been a DVD of this years event, I would order it asap. Especially as I wish I had attended yours, Mitchell's and Douglas's presentations.

I think there are plenty of things at Eurotek that interest people all over the world, and they are not going to travel to Eurotek to hear it. I also think there are a lot of benefits to attending a conference like this or Oztek or Beneath the Sea that go beyond just hearing the presentations.

So my answer is No, I don't think they would die as a result of presentations being put online. Yes, they could be offered for a charge on DVD or online subscription, but it would probably do the diving world more benefit if they were just posted online for all to share. They are still delayed, and somewhat incomplete because the ability to ask questions or discuss with peers is missing. So there is still a significant benefit to attending in person if possible.

I think a 1-3 month delay, release to DVD or better controlled, secure streaming access with a fee based equal to the admission would be a appropriate compromise.

That would cover the 2nd half of your concern... I think its an experiment worth playing out, and if the onsite audience became insufficient and enough people within reasonable travelling distance didn't attend - then drop it.

I don't think it would hurt your attendance at all, half of the reason for going to these events is to meet old friends and make new ones. The other reason for me anyways is to fondle all the new toys, or bitch at the people that make last years toys that you bought that don't work. I would rather have them online than the dvd but thats just my preference. I watch all the ones Curt posts because you cant be everywhere all the time and I do believe that there is a service to divers to get this information out there.
    Thanks

    Leigh,

I agree completely with the philosophy you applied with one caveat. If there are any presentations with specific safety messages that need to be put across (i.e. it could save a life), then those should be disseminated in some way free of charge. That may not be video, but an editorial?

    Re: Eurotek online presentations ??

Being involved in the Eurotek interviews, this also interests me.

One of the problems that I see is the cost involved in putting the DVDs or online material together.
At Eurotek, there are 4 simultaneous sessions going on. To properly record one session you need a minimum of two people, better three (two cameras one sound guy). So you are looking at a crew of 10 people and loads of equipment.

After the event the DVDs need to be edited. We are talking about +40 hours of material. That is a time consuming job.

Technically it is certainly doable, but the pure production cost would be quite high.

So the question is, how much would people be willing to pay for either a Eurotek DVD box or online access and how many people would actually be buying. And we need to keep in mind that a substantial amount will need to flow back to the organisers because there is the risk that less people will turn up for future events.

    Peter

BTW - more interviews from Eurotek will be released shortly.

I would also willing to pay (either on line or DVD).

honestly I don't think I would interested for all 40 hours of presentations.

I would just be interested for the 5-6 presentation related to RB safety , accident analysis, medical, DECO ect etc

Pick and choose your content. Go with a highlight reel. Attempting to cover it all is ridiculous. If anything, I think it will generate more interest in your event. Don't look at it as replacement for attendence, look at it as informative promotion.
