    Inspo type/ JJ-CCR BOV Operation

I'm starting to look at BOV's. I like the compact size of the JJ-CCR unit, but I can't quite figure out how it works from the pics. I'm trying to visualize the operation from CC to OC. Most of the BOV's I've seen have some type of lever or T-handle that makes the switch. The website says a 1/4 turn of the hose changes from OC to CC.

What is being turned? Do you hold the body of the DSV/BOV and rotate the hose connector? Are both hoses connected to a common barrel and the inhale and exhale hoses turn as a set? If so, is there a tendency for the hose nut to loosen/come undone when operating the changeover? Is there so much resistance that it takes two hands, or can you work it single handed?

These are probably pretty silly questions, but since I have never seen an Inspo up close, I have no idea how it operates. If anyone can enlighten me on this or, even better, has some pics of the operation or internals that would be wonderful.

    Thanks, FD;)

    FD,
the breathing hose ends both turn together with a central barrel in the outer casing. The ends that are screwed on then have self tapping screws put through them and into the central barrel to act as locking pins.
If you don't need it to be ce marked I'd recommend the JJ BOV over the AP one, based on how compact they are and how well engineered the one I had a play with was.

Thanks, I saw a better picture after I posted that sort of showed what your describing. The set screws lock the ring to the barrel, and you twist the ring closest to the body of the BOV to operate the changeover.

What about the ease of operation? Is is a one hand deal, or do you need to steady the BOV with one hand and operate the switch with the other.

I could care less about CE, as long as it works well. I'm just now starting to shop for BOV's, but I so far am leaning towards the JJ. Anybody that has first hand experience with it, I'd love to hear from you.

    Thanks, FD.:)

Re: Inspo type/ JJ-CCR BOV Operation

both the inspo and JJ BOV were possible to switch one handed, although the JJ BOV was a smooth and easy switch whilst the AP BOV was marginal (much stiffer and felt more akward, I wouldn't feel confident switching it one handed in the water). Both use the same (standard inspo) mushroom valves although un-confirmed rumour has it that the JJ has a slightly lower WOB in CC mode.
Whilst the JJ Bov is not CE approved it has been tested against the CE specs and the results are available at JJ-CCR - CE Test , note that these figures are for 75 Litres per minute (a touch under 3 cubic feet) RMV.

    Simon,

I do not agree at all that you can operate the AP BOV with one hand. I have tried and was unable to do it. Personally I would be surprised if you could with the JJ.

This is one of the reasons that I have a BOV that can be switched with a simple quarter turn of a handle.

    Just my 2 cents.

you can operate the JJ-bov with one hand but its best to steady the bov with the other hand as well.
We have just developed a HUD holder that also acts as an on/off lever, as soon as I have one I will put a picture up.

In my exeprience almost all BOV's are a two handed job whatever the type of the on/off switch, if they are one handed they usually are not very good at pos/neg tests

thats a personal observation and I havent tried all the BOV's that are on the market!

I'm fairly strong and have a very good grip, and I found the AP BOV in air could (just)be switched with one hand, but I wouldn't feel confident to do it in the water one handed though. The JJ BOV was vastly different, and if I had one I would normaly use 2 hands to switch it, but I would feel confident to clench my teeth on the mouth piece and turn with one hand if I had to.
It's no more loading on the teeth when switching than the Bob Howel BOV I own (but can't use 50% of the time due to it not being CE)
The OP asked for a comparison between the APD and JJ BOV's so I'm guessing that telling him all about a completely different type was not what he wanted.

Golom BOV is definitely one handed. I found any neg test issues are due to the reg diaphragm rather than the barrel seal.

    Hi Guys!

This maybe a dumb question, but I have a hard time figuring out how the JJ BOV works. Can't get my head around it.

If the switch between CC and OC is done by turning the hoses, is it possible to mount the JJ on the Meg where the HUD is placed on the hoses themselves?

This may seem like an odd question, but I can't get the picture in my head.

    Thanks

I had a look at one at Euro Tec .It works the same way you operate the dsv on the inspo. Just turn.
