Re: VR3 USB - Serial Help

I had zero luck with the Belkin adaptor and went with the Radio Shack version and it worked right away.

I can't say for the Belkin, but I have a Keyspan USA-19HS that I use for my Suunto Vytec, and it works fine. It's usually available at CompUSA or Best Buy, and Keyspan claims "Best in Class" compatibility. You might want to give it a shot, and just make sure it is set up correctly on the COM ports. I'm planning on purchasing a VR3 soon, so please let me know how it goes.

Re: VR3 USB - Serial Help

First question is, what COM port does the Belkin show up as? I would recommend setting it to 1 or 2 if not already. Have you tested this serial port on something else?

It's showing up as com 4 & I have used the same lead in the same hole for the vision download & it works fine

Re: VR3 USB - Serial Help

So next question, are you using the IR interface to serial to PC to talk to the VR3? I have that and had problems as well. Had to switch to Com1 and disable all handshaking on the com port to get it to work. You can change the port inside device manager... com ports... adv port settings... in case anyone has trouble finding the settings.

Re: VR3 USB - Serial Help

I in no way claim to be a computer expert- I classify myself as someone who knows just barely enough to be dangerous….. but-

I took the time to talk w/ some hard core geeks before I bought the Belkin F5U409 USB~Serial converter I use w/ my VR3 IR link. Not all converters are created equal and some are absolute junk.

In essence, these things can get really fussy about which port they are connected to. Modern computers create “virtual” COM ports galore, but converters often don’t like virtual ports. Com ports 1 & 2 are generally the real thing and will work fine. My converter initially set itself up on port 4- and would not work. I tweaked it to port 2 via above mentioned method and now it works fine. I’d recommend leaving port 1 alone.

BTW, for GUI only folks:
COM = communications = serial = the original port early computers used for their external modems = agonizingly slow by today’s standards. Also sometimes used by early keyboards & mice.
LPT (the other port you’ll see next to the com port(s) in device manager) = LINE Printer = parallel = printer port. In the days prior to PCs, when I had to take my IBM 026 key punched deck of cards to the main frame, high speed printers produced an entire 17” line of text at once, hence the name line printer. The name stuck even if the method did not.

Re: VR3 USB - Serial Help

You have to buy a code to allow you to interface your Vr3 Backwards!!
I'm joking, but I may be right! Heck, don't you have to buy a code for the backlight!
