Nice idea Mark! I may try that myself.

There is a 4th way - replace the central tube which holds 5 cells and take the cable from there.

I have the chest 4th cell (it's a DeltaP one, not a Bob IIRC). It's just killed a cell due to all the moisture/condensation build up in it.

Hello all,

The 4th cell do you calibrate it each time you dive ? Can this be done at home before you leave for the dive? What do you do?

I just calibrate the YBOD and check the VR3 if its right its right if not I calibrate it.

Most of the time its right

I do the same as Mark. I just check the calibration at the same time I calibrate YBOD.

If it is not OK, I suck the loop empty and fill manually with oxygen three times. I calibrate the 4th cell when the CLs are full for the 3rd time. Just follow the instructions from VR3 manual.

I have gotten it quite close to the handset values allthough it react a bit slower. I guess that is because the YBODs own cells are so close to the solenoid. It takes at least one inhale to bring the fresh gas to the 4th cell.

Hi Pierre,

In my case I have shorten the corrugated hose from the Y to the T piece, not sure by how much but it must have been a good 5 to 7 rings. An important aspect of the Y piece is to remove the O'ring on the cell if it has one. If you buy your cells from APD they come without O'ring but from other suppliers they might. If you keep the O'ring, it will make a difference in the pressure between the front and back of the cell. This will make the tracking of PPO2 between the VR3 and INSP controller to go out of sync with time. Had a big debate a few years ago about this when the Y came out. I personnaly do not recalibrate the VR3 for every dive, once every 3-4 weeks works fine for me.

Cheers,

While using a 4th cell do you noticed any change in deco obligations as oppopsed without it ?

vr3 4th cell

Pierre
I dive with two Vr3's one with the Inspiration interface with the 4th cell controlling the deco the and the other Vr3 working on a set-point.
I find with run-times of around 100 mins they are within a minute or two of each other.
I have to admit I like the 4th cell pp02 reading for peace of mind in the event of the Inspiration electronics going down but it has not happened with my unit and if it did I could stay on the loop with the Vr3's pp02 reading.
With the Inspiration set-point set to say 1.3 I would expect the deco to work out fairly close as that is the set-point for the Vr3 unless you have forget to change to high set-point or have the Vr3's cell improperly calibrated and that should be apparent during your pre-breath.
I would calibrate the Vr3's cell about once a month or before I start a series of deeper dives or if I notice a slight diference in the Vr3's pp02 and the Inspirations a good time to check that is when calibrating the Inspiration electrics and the loop is being flushed with 100% 02 your Vr3 should read 1.0 (100%) then as you breath it down in the prebreath the values should move down together and then back up as the solonoid injects.

Cheers

I mount my VR3 on the YBOD Master hand set. That way when you check the VR3 you check the hand set and vice versa. This also has the advantage that you dont try and de kit whilst still conected to the unit via the cable. Very embarising and posably expensive.

Cable is just wraped arround the cable for the hand set.

Hi Mark,
I've been reading about hansets getting broken. You don't thing that the extra weight in the hanset can break it?
Thank you
Mikel

Only if i drop the hand set?? Apart from that I dont see how. I try not to drop my hand sets or my VR3's

Far more damage done trying to get out of the rig whilst still attached to the wrist unit
