Question Which vr3 version to buy ?

I am currently diving my vision & using my Vytec with tables as a back up .
Going to sell the Vytec & put the money towards a VR3 the question is which version should I go for that is going to be comparable with the vision ? Would love a sheerwater but their just to much money
What are the differences between the versions ? I'm not worried about linking it into the vision it will be stand alone .
TIA

Re: Which vr3 version to buy ?

Off Ebay,

VR3
monocrome oc/cc $1399
Color oc/cc $1699
VPM color oc/cc $1999

Shearwater is $1400

So, I thought the price was comparable.

Not trying to sway you. Just thought they were comparable.

In $ yes they are but I can't find a cheap sheerwater in the uk to compare to a secondhand VR£

Re: Which vr3 version to buy ?

Well you have two options to start
CC Nitrox and CC Trimix
then you have colour screen
VPM etc

if your only diving Nitrox for the time being get a CC nitrox and upgrade later the price difference is the same as the pin to upgrade (or it was)

Hi Colin,

You will need the Vr3 C4 if you want to use it for CCR diving with mixed gas this would cost you new 690 stg, 1030 Euro or 1300 USD.

The difference between the versions is:

C1 Open Circuit Nitrox

C2 Closed Circuit Air Diluent

C3 Open Circuit Trimix

C4 Closed Circuit Trimix Diluent.

The Closed Circuit models can also be used in Open Circuit mode.

The above units if fitted with a colour screen will add 179 stg, 265 euro or 335 USD to the new cost, if you buy a second hand unit it can be fitted with a colour screen at the same cost but you will have to allow postage to Delta P and back.

There are several ways to connect the Vr3 to a 4th Cell and the Pin Number to open the Vr3 cost's 133 Stg, 197 Euro or 249 USD so bear that in mind if you are looking at second hand 4th Cell kit's, they do not come with the pin number unless you buy it with the Vr3 that has the pin open.

The Standard Vr3 has the Buhlmann 16 Algorithm and this would give a similar profile to the Vision thou not identical.

Regards

Colin,

As you are diving the Vision, it computes the deco based on GF model.

If you use the VR-3, it uses Buhlmann + (Pyle-style) deep stops which won't match the deco profile. And yes, you could change the settings to have similar total RT, but not the profile.

If you use the Shearwater, it uses GF which you will be able to match profiles almost exactly.

Having said that, here are some random considerations based on my own experience and opinion:
  • The VR-3 color screen is just freaking great. The best screen of all of the computer/BT units I have ever used. I wish all of them have that.
  • Shearwater has a number of preset GF combinations. IMHO, they are all good and more popular combinations. But if you want to use something different (for whatever reason), it won't be possible. This is a very minor issue...
  • I have always like the menu scheme on the VR-3 (over the HS, for example), but the Shearwater is even better.
  • Size-wise, both VR-3 and Shearwater are approximately the same despite the different shapes. Bruce has upgraded the straps to be the same as the VR-3.
  • VR-3 uses a more common battery type, but the Shearwater battery should last a lot longer.

Absolutely correct. We returned from a wreck trip in France and we had the "use tables" on our VR3 on each dive. The deep stops on the VR3 screw up the Vision profile. Talking about a rather expensive bottom timer.

Red face Re: Which vr3 version to buy ?

I suppose it depends .I normally do deep stops anyway even on the Vision ,also depends how you set the GF on the vision .Iam actually changing mine to be more conservative than before after getting bent twice on 15/85 with no explanation !
