VR3 colour resetting itself to factory settings

Guys & Girls,

My wife Rita's colour VR3 decided last holiday in Norway to reset itself fully three days in a row. Reset as in: totally back to factory settings; clock to 1996, all settings, log, etc. lost.
Lucky we had Inspiration Vision as primary deco info..... My thinking: water was only 12 degrees, and the VR3 unit was stored outside during the night with around 1 degree C.
Could it be temperature related? In all cases it seemed to act fine, other that totally reset, after the dive, i.e. normal startup.
I thought battery voltage as a possible problem, due to temperature maybe. However, according to the VR3 main screen it was still 3.4V (out of a 3.6V battery).
Any clues as to reason why....?
