Canyon

Hello,
So I came back to Dahab again. This time with a group of recreational Divers, what means more time for me and my Optima. Since I became a merry owner of it I practically finished with diving using open circuit equipment. I’m still imprested of possibilities of Optima and I’m just asking myself if there is any end of its possibilities. Probably yes, but the question is “where?”
While my group was having fun underwater with local guides I’ve started my dives.
At first I started on a dive site called Caves. It’s a rocky overhang where the visibility was great, there was a lot of light so I started to take a pleasure from beautiful views, clear water and… my Optima.
My second favorite dive site (after Blue Hole) is Great Canyon. It’s a crack in a reef from 20 to 55 meters deep. In the end it begins to be quite dark and narrow but there are two exits. One on 49 meters and second on 55-60 meters deep.
In canyon, water is often stirred to 30 meters deep. It is a depth limit for recreational divers, deeper water is clear because not lot of divers go there.
After leaving canyon we have two options. Starting ascent and then you go beside the reef to the sand where you make a safety stop, or go deeper where a Neptun Cave is. It’s a typical cave on 73 meters deep.
On 100 meters another canyon begins. It reaches depth of 150 meters. This one has two arms. This time I chose the right one, I descent to 140 meters and came back.
This place is completely different than Blue Hole. In Blue Hole you have a drop off when in canyon you have to swim and slowly descent to the bottom.
What is important, you have to be really careful about the currents and you have to plan them in your runtime.
But this time there was a completely slack tide, there where no moves so no problems with swimming to the reef.
As always 7 days finished really fast. I think that my next trip will be on fall to see the other arm of the deeper canyon.

Re: Canyon

Hi

I dived the canyon in Dahab in my old OC days, it's a fantastic dive (better than blue hole IMHO).
Here is a pic from inside the canyon and on the way back up on the outside.

Re: Canyon

Hi Christian,
These are great pics, when have you been there? The second canyon is deeper but also very beautiful, unfortunatelly on 120 meters deep. There are divers bodies lying on the bottom. Sad, they should be taken off the water.
Regards, Jacek

Hi Jacek

I believe it was in 2003. I stopped at the Neptun cave, pretty fantastic.

Yes, a shame about the bodies, i'm guessing no one wants to pay for the salvage costs.

I would like to go there again some day with my Rebreather, also to do a dive in the blue hole again for sure

What center did you use?

Re: Canyon

Hi Christian
I'm quite often in Dahab, at least once in two mounths. I'm bringing here my technical divers. I'm planning to go thereon August, then on October. Maybe we cam met there? I'm diving with Planet Divers, I know there almost everyone, especially gas blenders. The prices for gases and the service are ok. Their website is PLANET DIVERS, Dahab - PADI, IANTD, TDI Facility If you go there, please tell me so I can get there.
