Great report- thanks Mark, well done to Janos and Howard too.

I laughed and grimiced throughout the report, doing a cave course appeals even less to me now than before!

It makes me wonder whether a new skill like cave diving might be better learnt on OC?

Interesting, now you have been cave trained and having experienced someone running out of dil in cave I presume you have changed your position re CCR thirds planning :-

does a wreck diver need cave training to dive caves? - Page 2 - YD Dive Forums & Scuba Community

anyway, good write up.

sounds like you learnt a great deal.

Had you previously done any overhead course? (wreck)

Yes,

The thirds thing is interesting. We stopped running thirds Dill 3/4 way into the gig

We ran 50% +20bar

No thirds on bailout. It was 100% exit gas with a safety margin built in via SAC calculations

So we ran thirds on Scrubber and thirds on 02.

Thirds on a fresh fill seemed a tad extreme but it was ample for the diving we were doing.

Thirds on 02 wasn't an issue in any way. i don't think any one even got close to thirds on o2

As I said in the post to which you link, Whats the problem? we had BOVs so Howard having ran out of dill, just sucked in more dill from the bailout cylinder.

Yes, it was reason to thumb the dive but even for our low skill level it wasn't an issue.

Problem was caused by a hole in the wing loosing gas and mask flooding.

Dry suits were fed from off board gas so we had secondary independent buoyancy on offer and a hose to contact to the wing if required.

One thing for sure. The shallow caves used up a lot of diluent. The 3ltr tins we were using were adequate but I would definitely keep the option to use off board gas in an emergency.

Re: CCR Cave Training In Mexico with ProTec

Mark

Having also just completed CCR Cave I would like to understand some of the different planning contingencies being used. Maybe you could expand upon the thought process behind you DIL and BO stategies? Also, you might touch upon how you factored drysuit inflation needs into the BO quantity?

Would I be correct in assuming that what you have quoted is what Protec and or Matt use for all students?

Thanks, John
