Tonight (6/10/2008), at BU starting at 6:30 is a public forum for the public to comment on the Stellwagen Bank Draft Management Plan. It is one of several public forums the Sanctuary is holding to give the public a chance to go on record about how they would like their Sanctuary managed. Last night, in Wenham, the second forum was held, being close to Gloucester we had a great deal of Commercial Fisherman in attendance. Still, wreck divers showed up early and framed the debate in with 4 of the first 5 speakers. One fisherman actually interrupted diver Don Morse as he spoke, and though he later apologized indirectly, this was the first of many shots fired by the fishing community at the divers and conservationists. My sincere admiration goes out to Don Morse, Paul Blanchette, Dave Caldwell and to other divers who spoke and I did not recognize. It was an environment made intimidating by other groups, and you all did very well.

Your input as constituents, New England residents and users of the Stellwagen Bank Sanctuary makes your opinions wanted, valued and needed by the Sanctuary Program. I can promise you that this is not governmental lip service. The opinions of the public are being recorded, examined and used frame and justify the future management of Stellwagen Bank. Please examine the material provided and make yourself heard.

David Robinson of PAL discussed the methodology for locating and excavating submerged prehistoric sites through his recent work in Denmark. Presentations were also made by Matthew Lawrence of the Stellwagen Bank National Marine Sanctuary and Victor Mastone who introduced the new Shoreline Heritage Identification Partnerships Strategy program. Despite the poor weather, the weekend was successful.
