Some thoughts to the Internet or rather the lack of it and the feeling of being a slave to the modern live style.

Flashback

In 1995 when visiting the U.S., specific the Orlando area of Florida to complete my technical diver training I was introduced to the Internet and e-mails. I was flabbergasted to sit in front of a computer and writing something on that keyboard with my distinct and polished eagle typing style, circle prey that is and then attack, as I hacked text into the machine and on the other end in the UK was a friend of mine, by incident sitting in front of the computer and answering my lettters with a little time delay. I was blown away.

As my life went on I bought my first laptop computer in 1996 for $ 2000 usd with Pentium I processor with a wopping 100 mhz and a hard drive of 810 mb with 40 mb of ram, no CD rom reader but a floppy disk reader, back then I was on top of the heap. With it came the Internet through a PMCIA card and a 54k dialup modem. Great stuff.

Today

All my communication goes through the Internet in form of e-mails as I seem to remember shit and really learned to apreciate the written word as form of record of what has been said on various topics. I have multiple e-mail accounts and all of them are accessible via any internet cafe around the world if the need should arrive. My seemingly full calender and life is organized by two online calenders, one for buiz life and the other for private life with family and the like.

As I finally got to move back into my house after 11 month of painfully slow reconstruction and remodeling I am happy to say I am glad to be home again. I just forgot how slow Internet or cable companies can be in providing their colorfully advertised services but in reality suck on coming across what they advertised, and I am sure I am not alone with that sentiment here in Mexico.

So I am sitting at home, new home, remodeled home that is with my old trusted pc that I might have to replace soon as programs and applications become ever more complex and the old trusted warrior pc of mine is getting a coronary attack once in a while ... and I have no phone or Internet service.

Lucky me I have another pc in my office but regretfully I have to dive at times quite a bit so cyber diving takes a second after the real thing.

The realization that I have no Internet back home came when I had no access to some online news magazines I enjoyed reading early in the morning or browsing some insightfull forums to learn what moved the world since I logged in the last time.

The Internet or the lack of it became quite apparent to me. The one bright streak of sunlite on the horizon is my better half as she gave me out of the blue a Blackberry phone .. and allas ... I can read my e-mails in the morning and some news too .. only some web pages are to heavy to have on a mobile.

I actually do not feel like a slave to the Internet but a certain dependence on it manifests itself at times ...

Now I'm working again (no internet allowed there! ), I spend very little time online. It's funny but I like having the time back. And Rebreather World does seem very dull at the moment, but maybe that's because I'm not hanging off every word like I did when I was bored at home.

That said, I'd be lost without any email...
