Does anyone else think this looks interesting?

SPOT Satellite Messenger and Tracker - Globalcom

If fit into a watertight emergency case with maybe some small flares etc. it might provide some peace of mind.

They're selling a subscription service with the beacon. You can also buy PLB's [make sure they work on the new frequency if you buy one second hand though-406 MHz] that rescue services can track from on board equipment.

If you need a sub to keep the service running it will offset the low initial cost of the equipment, and you are at the mercy of the dreaded "terms and conditions" which will no doubt include a 'we reserve the right to withdraw the service at any time with no warning" clause.

A test on emergency flares in teh UK showed that the smaller ones were pretty useless. Smoke [if it is calm] seemed to be better than a short duration flare. A small mirror is also useful for signalling when it's sunny, and a strobe when it isn't
