Hi all, I just came across this article about checking bags with airlines. Well, I better should say, checking a bag before the airlines want to see some $$$.

And you know as well as I do what the outcome of that will be! One of the major carrier will start with this new money making scheme and all others will follow suit.

We already have this in the UK. Airlines are charging for second bags and giving a 15kg baggage allowance with a 5kg hand luggage restriction. You also have to pay extra to be sat together and for meals.

Some airports will only allow a single piece of hand luggage. In the good old days laptop computers, ladies hand bags and camera cases were somehow ignored on the baggage allowance, but not now.

We fly out to Mexico next week and they phoned and asked for extra money so we could get seats next to our 9 year old and 11 year old children. I refused and informed them I would expect an air steward to sit with my children throughout the flight if they were not with us.

It is far worse than that.

Southwest just went from three bags checked to two and United announced in the Seattle Paper today, that the charge is $50.00 for a second bag if you are NOT a premier flier on United or the Alliance partners. This is only for non-refudable tickets. United estimate 100 MILLION in extra revenue from this little scam. Expect others to follow soon if no one really screams about this.

No more allowance for "sports gear" either.

Well, give it some time and they will come up with something else. Before you know you can not even bring any hand baggage, unless you of course pay for it.

The old days were so nice, 2x or 3x 70 pounds and no one really cared about the carry on either.

I guess I just keep dreaming, of the old days and not what is ahead.

what airline is this?

sad to hear about the Southwest qouta decrease... 3 checked with a carry on made packing for dive trips so easy... just had to deal with short haul flights...

United had the great Idea to charge $25 for the second bag.
I am wondering when they start charging for the second cabin bag

It is about time that those are charged hauling all the bags and holding up the bording process.

Just so they must not wait to get their possession back at the carousel.

if they get their possessions back... I travel alot for work, and recently ALL airlines I have been using have been horrible with baggage, delays getting it to the carousel, often "loosing" it...

United, American, Southwest airlines...
