| So much more to learn ![]() Current Rebreather/s: | Re: Valve Flusher, Maintenance Aid That is a very good idea! Green posted. One of my most memorable gear failures was a wing with 110lb lift. I miss out the company, because any wing can do this. We were trimix diving from a RIB down in Cornwall, from a sandy beach - something I do not normally do (diving at the time was from rock, hardboats etc). Anyhow, sand got everywhere. After cooking in a dry suit, full trimix kit, on a RIB, finally got in the water. Descent helped relax, more from relief from not being on the RIB. Started swimming around the wreck. After a few minutes, there was a pop, and suddenly I started going upwards, so pulled out my dry suit valve, but was still going upwards so I swam over to the wreck and hung on. Unfortunately when hanging onto the wreck, with a 110lb lift wing full up with gas, you cannot bend into a ball to get the dump valve very high, so the dump valve does not work (air does not come out of the lowest parts of a wing very well). I was rehearsing in my mind the sequence of letting go of the wreck, rocketing up while going for my knife and cutting through the wing, working out how many feet per second this would be, when my buddy noticed (Mark Reeves) and swam over. He tried dumping the wing but could not. He then nearly had a heart attack when he realised what the problem was and could not get the connector off the inflator. I was muttering to get the <snip> knife out, when he got his knife and stabbed the wing. We debated about continuing the dive as there was a redudant wing, but decided that we had better call it as you never what can happen next when this sort of thing happens. Sand. It is amazing stuff when inside inflators. I have never heard of anyone else with a wing fail. A certain dive operation in that part of the world could hardly believe it. Saw the cut wing, and the language from my buddy, and thought we had a curse over us. Everything fails, sometime. Washing things out properly no doubt increases the space between those "sometimes". Alex I shore dive in So Cal. That means sand in places it was never intended to be. ![]() I have always made a practice of flushing, or trying to flush fresh water through my power inflator "add" valve and through my drysuit inflate valve. Usually I just hold the end of the garden hose over the nipple and hope some of the flow actually goes through the valve. This sort of works. Then I got the idea of taking an old LP hose and via the magic of thread cutting lathes, connect a female garden hose adapter on the "regulator" end of the hose. Bingo! Very handy. Just click on the nipple of either the power inflator or Drysuit inflator and push nice, clean, salt free water through these potentially finicky valves. Others might want these I thought, but the cost of a LP hose assembly + special 3/8 x 24 to 1/2 npt adapter + garden hose adapter would make it about $40. Bummer. What was needed was a device that would accept a male garden hose on one end and fit onto to an inflator QD nipple on the other. Here it is. http://www.rebreatherworld.com/photopost/data/500/medium/P1010183.jpg http://www.rebreatherworld.com/photo...m/P1010184.jpg http://www.rebreatherworld.com/photo...m/P1010181.jpg This part is molded out of a fairly stiff durometer elastomer. It has threads in the big hex end to screw onto a garden hose. On the other end just pushes onto the nipple. There is a "oring" like feature in this end of the hose that engages the groove in the inflator nipple. This "snap fit" makes the Valve Flusher self retaining up to about 100 psi water pressure. The small ball shut off valve makes the flusher easy to use, and provides a secure attachment to the garden hose. Many garden hose ends are imperfect (beat up) and the shut off valve has a replaceable washer. I don't yet have final pricing, but I hope to offer the shutoff valve and Valve flusher for about $12.
