New Gizmo, Valve Knob Retainer Tool

Having had a valve knob come off in my hand (at a fill station thankfully) I pretty quickly had a broad bladed screw driver mounted on a surface grinder, adding the necessary notch to the blade. The resultant tool worked great, but was on the large side for my dry box, and was much too much trouble and expense to produce.

Now I have a different solution.

These are 16 ga (.062") SS.

$5 each + $3 postage (US addresses) $4 most other locales.

Re: New Gizmo, Valve Knob Retainer Tool

Had a valve knob come off in my hand while on the boat, (better in the boat than in the water ) Collected up all the bits and after a little difficulty, replaced and began the dive. Nice idea...I'm in...

Re: New Gizmo, Valve Knob Retainer Tool

Many years ago I asked my father to make a few of these from golf shoe keys. Very handy to have.

Handy Gadget!

Another thing you can do is place 242 Locktite (Blue) on the threads to help prevent the nut coming undone. The locktite still releases with little effort by a screw driver when the valve is due for servicing.

Speaking from experience (Own a Dive Shop) this works very well. Sherwood valves are the worse for the nut backing off.

My favorite "Temporary" thread locker is simply teflon tape, i.e. pipe joint tape. A turn or two on the male threads provides a "filler" that deforms and fills the clearance between the male and female threads. Filling this clearance goes a long way to prevent vibration loosening, or "walking" of the nut on the bolt.

Cheap, not messy, readily available.

Disassembly is of course unimpeded.
