SCRUBS on the "Skycliff"

Well, a small contingent of the SCRUBS hit the wreck of the " Skycliff " today. this was our first dive on this wreck which is just slightly north of the Boyton Beach, FL inlet.

SFLDiver, Swadiver, Tienuts and Down4fun utilized the Undersea Explorer boat out of Boyton Beach for this excursion. Mrs. Swadiver, Sirene, was out with a cold.

Sea were 2 to 3 ft on a typical south Florida summer morning as we headed out. current was running about 2.5 knots on the surface, so we set up for our famous South Florida hot drop scenario. As we geared up, Tienuts had to abort due to an equipment malfunction. (sucks to be you, Tony). The rest of us hit the water and dropped quick looking for the wreck.

Captain Kevin's drop was dead on as we hit directly into the south facing bow with the current running to the north. the current on the wreck was even stronger than on the surface which made for some interesting up/down wash effects all over the wreck.

This is a big freighter with lots of relief. the wheelhouse area and most of the wreck is covered with beautiful yellow cup coral. lots of penetration areas to explore and even inside portions of the wreck have cup coral all over it. guess there is probably no let up in the current promoting this growth.

depth is about 200 fsw to the sand, but with lots of relief. we averaged around 185 fsw or so. vis was an acceptable 50 ft give or take.

after about 31 minutes, we elected to drift back to the stern and blow the bag for our drifting deco. total run time about 90 mins.

Sorry, no video or pics this time. Tienuts had the video camera (now sleeping on the surface) and the SCRUBS resident still photographer, SflDiver, decided that discretion is the better part of valor and limit his photo ops to some deco shots. the blistering current must have made handling that big DSLR a real challenge.

This was a fabulous dive. Captain Kevin and his mate did a great job with support. we are already planning another dive back to this wreck soon with Undersea Explorers.

It was an awesome dive! The cup coral was just amazing. It was like fields of cup coral swaying in the current. And of lets not forget the spa like deco temps I had 87F at 40 feet. You gotta love Florida

Re: SCRUBS on the "Skycliff"

You really have cut Swadiver some slack with the boat name. His eyes are completely shot.
