    Shearwater Petrel problem

I have a Shearwater Petrel divecan model that is the controller for my Diverite Optima rebreather. I have recently encountered a problem that I'm hoping The collective wisdom can help with. The right side button appears to either be stuck or not functioning. When I try turning it on by pushing both buttons, nothing happens. I thought initially the battery was dead, so I switched batteries. The unit then powered up, but I could not acknowledge the warning/startup screen (by pushing the right side button). I can still turn the unit off by pushing the left side button. Has anyone else encountered this problem? If so, how was it resolved? I'm already in contact with Shearwater and prepared to ship it to them if necessary. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
    thanks in advance.

Rightside Piezo Sensor is KAPUTT. It'll have to be replaced either by the factory or a factory authorized repair center.
Usually, as long as they can see that you didn't use the Petrel as a hammer, the repair shouldn't cost much more than postage.

Send it in. There is a Shearwater service center in the US so no messing with international customs. Not going to be something you fix yourself.

let them check for any other damage due to "flooding". I had exactely the same problem last year. I couldn't use both piezo buttoms anymore. it turned out to be slight water damage on the internal print. at the repair centre they found that the O-ring of the depthsensor wasn't seated correct.

    Re: Shearwater Petrel problem

Just got my Petrel2 back from the US service center. They appear to have done a fine job, replacing both buttons and pressure testing the unit. Since the unit was out of warranty, the repair was NOT cheap ($216) but they did give me an additional 6 month warranty....for what that's worth. Unfortunately, when your Shearwater is the controller for your rebreather as apposed to a stand alone unit, they kinda have you over a barrel. Hopefully I won't have any other problems with it!

    Re: Shearwater Petrel problem

So far I've become addicted to my Shearwaters.
2 Predators are being used as controllers and the 2 Petrel II externals are secondary computers on my 2 ECCRs or one of the Petrel IIs is used as an only computer on my Bailout Flex. They have been good to me.

The Shearwater HUD is not something that I ever developed any fondness for, since I don't like bright LEDs right in front of my exe while cavediving.

    Re: Shearwater Petrel problem

Please don't mistake my post as a complaint about Shearwater. I love my Petrel2 Divecan controller, the HUD is also a reliable piece of gear. I also use a Perdix AI as backup and tank pressure monitor. I have a lot invested in Shearwater and rely on them. They are, currently the best game in town! I'm just frustrated at the cost of what should be a minor repair on an essential piece of equipment.
