    Palau Wrecks - Desecrate One

    Greetings
Little late in posting, but I went on a wreck trip in Palau in Feb17 on the MV Palau Siren from a lesser known WW2 battle - designated DESECRATE ONE by US Navy. It was a follow up to the assault on Truk (ie Hailstone). An estimated 30 + Jap ships were sunk over couple of days - mostly Maru's (cargo and supply vessels). Depth was around 80 - 120 ft on most - we used Air (I was diving a KISS Orca).
The trip was a rare opportunity to see some rarely dived wrecks from WW2. There were only 2 (1 CCR and 1 OC) of us doing the wrecks - everyone else was doing the usual reef diving found in Palau. I and my partner (Matt - a Dive Master living in Palau) were the only CCR divers.
Wrecks dived - Teshio Maru, Nissho Maru, KATE seaplane, Amatsu Maru, Chuyo Maru, Bicho Maru, IJN Iro, Urakami Maru, Ryoku Maru, IJN Showa (subchaser), IJN Sata, & Nagisan Maru.
Some of the wrecks were partially salvaged (after WW2) and others were completely intact (except for war damage).
The Siren was great vessel to dive from - we were taken to dive sites via skiff, while the MV stayed anchored in one location. Crew were excellent and very helpful. The Siren only does this kind of trip 1 or 2 times a year and this was the first time a specific wreck dive was done.
Diving was sometimes great Viz and not so great. Most of the ships were sunk by bombs or torpedo's, so damage varies quite a bit. There is some penetration u can do - the Sata is great - ship is upside down, but there is large torpedo hole next to engine room which gives easy access.
One thing we discovered, was on the Showa - it has as large number of Nudibranchs on it that no one was aware of.
I have been to Truk and this is on par with that trip. Only real difference was Viz - Truk is better for most part (Palau wrecks have lot of plankton at times which reduces Viz).
These pics are sampling of what I shot.

We dived the Palau wrecks last year from Sam's and the Americans there who were diving the reefs thought we were mad.

Frankly, those guys hanging off a reef hook looking at sharks are the mad ones when there are great wrecks to visit within 20 minutes of base.

The Iro is magnificent - so good we did it three times.

Nice pictures, I'm envious. I've tried several times to kick start a trip to that area but never seems to come together.

For those of u who might be interested - should look at Palau Siren liveaboard. They are interested in doing more of the wreck trips, if they can get enough sign ups. They can do both reef and wrecks but would be nice to do an all-wreck trip with rebreathers.
