    Seacure mouthpiece and silcone sealant?

I have tried several times to get a good seal using a Seacure mouthpiece on an explorer BOV and it just does not seem to be 100% airtight. Is it OK to apply a bead of silicone sealant between the BOV tube and the mouthpiece (maybe in the channel on inside of the mouthpiece) then install the mouthpiece and the usual zip tie ("tie wrap")?
Is there an issue with silicone introducing any fumes or whatever into the loop or is this safe?

Silicone is almost required for most DSVs. I have been using silicone to get my SeaCures to seal up for over 14 years now and other than growing a fourth nipple there have been no effects. Just let the silicone cure at least 24 hours before using it.

Tip - sand both the DSV and the inside of the seacure slightly to get a better seal. Do not cinch the zip ties completely tight until cured or it will squeeze out all of the silicone.

I really hope the results are positive. I've been anxious for some time to replace the standard mouthpiece.

You could also try PTFE plumbers tape, a few wraps of it around the mouthpiece can help provide a decent seal.

OK, put 100% silicone on the mouthpiece/ BOV interface as discussed after a very light rub with sandpaper. I am thinking now that maybe I should have put more silicone on but we'll see tomorrow when it has cured and I put the final tighten on the tie wrap, then test it for leaks.

It never hurts to put too much on. After it has cured, it is easy to cut off any extra both internal and external. Using the clear stuff helps to not show the mistakes so much also.

Same problem before on my Classic Kiss BOV.
Then I found a solution. I used a tank neck O-ring to create a seal in the gap between the SeaCure mouthpiece and wall of the BOV plus an extra cable tie on it to pressure down and hold it in place. Works well after that. My 2 cents.

    Cheers!

Like Don I have been securing a SeaCure mouthpiece to my BOV for years with silcone. When SeaCure came out with the #4 type which was listed to fit the Shrimp BOV I installed one. It was installed using silicone and tie warp. On one of my cave dives the mouthpiece separated from the BOV. This theoretically causes one to lose the loop and his Bailout access. Not panicking for I had other second stages connected to a breathable gas but I chose to go back on the loop and breath off the BOV stub.
I now heat the part that goes over the BOV stub before installing. So far it hasn't come off.

Re: Seacure mouthpiece and silcone sealant?

I had a spare new #5 Seacure X type mouthpiece that seems to fit the Hollis BOV perfectly and as tightly as Seacures in the past have fitted my regulators. This was originally bought for a Hollis 500se and is the large tube size for Poseidon regs. It makes sense that the 500se and Hollis BOV probably use a similar size tube and as I said it is a good fit. The silicone is nearing the 24 cure time and seems to be a good solid attachment with no obvious leaks when I suck on it with both mushroom valves blocked- next will do a final tighten on the tie wrap and make sure it does not move when pulled or wiggled.
