New comparative research on sodalime preparations

    Hello,

Our spherasorb vs sofnolime paper published this month in Diving and Hyperbaric Medicine can now be accessed via the following link:

    http://www.dhmjournal.com/index.php/...lease-articles

This matter has been debated a number of times over the years. As you will see there are grounds for being cautious about the relative performance of sorb preparations.

This is the second in our series of studies on CO2 matters in rebreathers (the first was the study to determine whether a 5 minute prebreathe can reliably detect incomplete scrubbing of CO2 from a rebreather circuit published last year).

Data collection is complete or nearly so in other studies addressing: how to store a partially used CO2 scrubber ("unprotected on the shelf" vs sealed in an airtight bag); extendair cartridges vs granular sorb; and how accurately temp sticks predict CO2 breakthrough. At least some of these data will be presented at Eurotek and published in due course.

Re: New comparative research on sodalime preparations

why do I get the feeling that comparing Sofnolime 797 (6-12)to Sofnolime CD (4-8)grade would yield compareable results?

Comparing apples (4-8 grade) to oranges (6-12 grade) will always lead to the conclusion that they taste different.
Next time please compare apples to apples, and oranges to oranges.

    Michael,

If you actually read the paper and take note of the references you will understand the reason for "comparing apples to oranges". There has been considerable unresolved debate on the internet about using spherasorb in rebreathers, and controversy around accidents in relation to the spherasorb vs sofnolime question. There was (almost) no data in the pubic domain to inform that debate. In fact, the only previously available data was a study (the Russian one we cite) that completely contradicted your preconception. I put it to you that we are now in a much better position to have an informed discussion of this issue.

Simon, thanks for posting. Great work done.

But at the end I need to agree with Michael Fisch.

I would prefer a study comparing Intersorb 812 vs sofnolime 797.
Sure I understand your reasons for the kind of study you made and do not underestimate.

I'm looking forward to your other research about sorb being released.

Sofnolime states that their 4-6 CD Grade will absorb 100L of CO2 per kilo, and that their 797 8-12 Grade will absorb 140-150L of CO2 per kilo.

From your results there appears to be an insignificant difference between Sofnolime product specs and your Intersorb measurements as long as the particle size is similar.

Who is impressed with the amount of effort that you put into proving that apples taste different than oranges, or that a rock that is thrown up into the air will come down.

    Simon-

I've always said that whenever Simon Mitchell talks, I learn something useful. This study reaffirms the statement. After seeing so much unsupported subjective opinion presented as fact, it is a true breath of fresh air to see a well documented scientific study.

    Many thanks!

    Ken
