Long Deco's - How do you pass the time?

    Aloha everyone,

My buddy and I routinely do 3 hour closed circuit dives on our Prisms, usually we are pretty well entertained scootering along during deco. On Saturday we did our first 4 hour dive and because our scooters have a burn time of about 2.5 hours, we had to sit around for quite awhile.

We were in a 20' rubble patch so I found myself stacking flat-ish rocks, taking awkward selfies with my camera, drinking water through my hydration pack, slurping on squeezable applesauce and as a science diver...practice spelling the scientific names of fish.

Whether you're also doing really long dives, or just really good at entertaining yourself, what do you do to amuse yourself? Specifically to the other extreme exposure divers, what are some things you eat during deco? The applesauce was just sitting in my pantry, I have another buddy that eats bananas on deco. I'm wanting to play around with those gel packets that athletes use during triathlons. Thoughts on these?

    Mahalo!

    TP

I like to pocket a go pro and eye ball a good place to let a time lapse run. Your stuck in the water anyway and once you swim away from the drop point lots of critters come out to investigate. I spend a bit of time picking a spot first. You can use the same cam to check trim, stowage, and placement while getting some good videos with you in them. I practice drills, pick up trash and fishing line, look for lobster holes, and stare at my tts while likely taking unnecessary bumps of o2 to shave off a few minutes. But thats on the reefs. For open water deco im seriously considering housing my phone for books, music, and videos.

Mostly I spend it shuffling gear around, humming a tune to annoy a nearby buddy (never do the jaws theme when you're solo, you start to feel like you're just inviting them) or planning software in my head.

In the past I've taken books underwater (they're fine as long as you never open them above water), and even magazines (the shiny paper survives longer). Mates have been known to take down 'specialist' publications. I know this because the fuckers have festooned the back of my unit with them.

The gels are a very personal thing, personally i cant even stomach them when Im cycling. Bananas are quite easy to eat underwater.

We just got some Ipod shuffles (waterproofed) that can be loaded with e-books. Will see how that works:)
