5th Annual Cozumel Tech Week with Deep Exposure - 2015

Cozumel Tech Week 2015 With Deep Exposure

Just returning from a week of CCR diving in Cozumel with Deep Exposure Dive Center. We were there as part of their 5th Annual Tech Week in Cozumel. Had an excellent time and will be looking to return next year!

Hates off to Don, the shop, and the crew for a terrific week of diving and an opportunity to meet new friends. Blanca in the dive shop kept us organized each morning with tank fills, gear, and getting to the right boat and location. Deep Exposure ran 2 boats for the week. One boat (Swordfish) was for open circuit technical and recreational divers while the second boat (Deep Exposure) was for rebreather divers.

Onboard the Deep Exposure boat, we couldn’t have asked for better support from Captain Giovanni and crew Pepe, Roger, and Charlie. We completed 2 nice drift dives each day on different reefs throughout the week. Roger was with us each day in the water and Don dove with us several days. Don took time out to complete OC Trimix training for a diver on the Swordfish boat.

We had a mix of rebreathers on the boat at various times: 4 rEvos, 1 Optima (yes that’s Fergus), 1 Meg, and 3 Hollis. There was one other rEvo on the OC boat. There were 2 divers (Chris and Dave) completing a next level of CCR certification with instructor Ron Benson (Deep Thought on RBW). Chris and Dave are on RBW as well but didn’t get their RBW id. Hopefully they’ll chime in here!

And guess who was one of the Hollis divers, our very own RBW moderator, Dave Tomblin (wedivebc). After all this time on RBW, I finally got to not only meet Dave in person but dive with him.

The morning dive on the Deep Exposure boat for rebreathers, consisted of a 90min-120min run time with depths ranging from 200-300ish feet. We had a range of depths everyone was interested in completing, which was easily accommodated while still diving in a group. Roger did an excellent job of keeping an eye on everyone in the water even though we were at various depths. Roger is also quite the lionfish hunter which I also learned requires him to be quite the fender off of sharks because the sharks really seem to like lionfish!

We took a nice break after the morning dive to have a lunch freshly prepared by Pepe each day on the boat. Giovanni would find us a nice location to chill for a bit while enjoying a recap of the dive and grabbing some great food. We had a special treat one afternoon consisting of freshly prepared lionfish ceviche!

After grabbing some lunch, there were tanks on the boat to top-off dil and O2 if needed. Second dive of the day in the afternoon was another fantastic drift dive usually at a depth of 150’ for 90-120 minutes.

I have to also mention that Eric and I were diving with the Thermalution heated dive vests for the first time this week. It was awesome to have that kick of warmth on the dive. Although we had awesome warm weather and the water temps weren’t bad, it was very nice to have that bit of heat kick-in when you started to chill down in the water. Highly recommend them!

We had a great time diving and kicking back with a great group of folks. Photo below doesn’t show everyone attending Cozumel Tech Week 2015 but does include almost all the CCR divers on the Deep Exposure boat for the week. From front then moving left:
Maria and Fergus Butler – Fergus was diving the Optima
Chris Lidel – diving a rEvo
    Gene – diving a Hollis
    Dave Tomblin– diving a Hollis
Eric Cunningham – diving a rEvo
    Ron Benson –diving a rEvo
Dave Schlenker – diving a Meg

It was great diving with you. I had a blast. Sorry I missed the last day but the caves were calling and I needed to rinse my gear.

Awesome trip to Cozumel, if anyone is looking for a well supported CCR dive operation with great diving Deep Exposure is highly recommended. We have been there twice this winter and plan on going back in the future.

It was nice to meet everyone on the trip
