    sofnolime prices...?

    Pheweeee!

Whilst investigating whether it makes financial sense for me to learn/get into CCR, (it doesnt. But im doing it anyway....), i recently found out that 20kgs of sofnolime is $300 here in NZ. ouch. At current rates, thats £156, or $234 US for 20kgs!

It just made me wonder what are costs for same elsewhere in the world? I know prices in uk, (around £75?). Was just wondering what others pay. I was also wondering whether there is any research which links high costs of lime with incidents of hypercapnia? (I KNOW that my life is more important than ANY price for sofnolime....but I cant help thinking that people will be more likely to push things, the higher the cost of lime?).

Just interested, thats all. Not interested in LDS bashing or such like, although if anyone knows how I can get good cheaper lime in NZ, I'm all ears...(currently exploring spherasorb options...)

    Re: sofnolime prices...?

    Hi there,

living in China and diving mostly SE Asia I know that issue about scrubber prices... I hand carry most of it from Germany via Shanghai to wherever I dive...

In Germany 1kg of Sofnolime 797 cost me around Euro 4,- USD ~5,-
On Bali, Philippines, Fiji I pay around Euro 12-20 thats about USD 15-25,- per Kg.

At least in Germany price wise it makes no difference weather to buy in 4.5 or 20kg kegs! So I always order 4.5kg because they are easier to handle.

If you are traveling a lot or you have high prices on scrubber at your home country it might be well worth looking into a scrubber efficient unit like the rEvo. A RMS rEvo might be somewhat more expensive than other rebreathers but saves you lots and lots of scrubber over the years...

E.g. me and my wife went for a vacation to the Philippines for 20 days we did ~25h and I still took some of my 18Kg Sofnolime I brought with me home while being well within the limits of the RMS and one complete scrubber dump before the usual dive time because of being soaked...

While usually some, especially the US guys, joke around about how much you spend on RMS and how "little" it safes you, you see that with complete different eyes when you live in a country where scrubber costs you up to 20USD/Kg or is not available at all like in China...

    Cheers

    Christian

2 bucks per hour is alot cheaper on the wallet than trimix fill on double 130's here in Canada. It used to cost me 70.00 just for back gas not counting stages. Sofnolime here ranges $180-$200 for 44 pound keg and some shops will discount depending on the expirey date....

If you have a group of divers, get together and buy a pallet! Bulk purchase will save $$.

Wow. That wins hands down. I dont feel so hard-done-by anymore! so, by my obviously flawed logic, hypercapnia rebreather incidents might be proportionally more common in mexico? I know there are so many independent variables (water temp, depth of diving, lime availability, training standards, rebreather units most commonly used in a given area, etc etc) that a proper, controlled study would be impossible...but I AM curious...

Thanks for all these responses. I wonder if anyone knows about any research in this area, identifying the relative risk for individual variables, which could contribute to incidents of hypercapnia? Just my twopenneth, but It would be good for coroners to make recommendations like: "cheaper lime for all", rather than us poor saps relying on ever-more expensive, "failsafe" technologies, which may simply serve to increase complacency just a thought. Mebbe I should set up my own lime making company

Don't go through a dive shop try Divers Supply Inc. - Search
They are a commercial diver supply house.
