    Real Deep

Not sure if it still stands but ...

Chris Ullmann, Manfred FŸhrmann and Volker Clausen believe that they have completed the deepest rebreather dive ever accomplished after reportedly descending to 224.5m. The trio of record setting divers spent 6 hours in decompression on their gradual return to the surface.

Dave Shaw beat that with his original dive to the bottom of Bushmansgat, when he first discovered the body of Deon Dreyer, 283 metres.

IIRC, on the Ullmann, Fuhrmann & Clausen dive they used Inspirations with the buzzer installed. One or two of the buzzers imploded due to the ambient pressure, they did part of the dive on bailout before they received spare rigs to finish the dive. Good protocol, but I for one didn't count it as a record setting RB dive back then.

Dave Shaw's record stands, as his modified MK15.5 got him down and back up again. On the first dive, when he found the remains of an OC diver who perished at Boesmansgat 10 years earlier.

On the second dive, attempting to retrieve the remains, things went bad and Dave Shaw didn't survive.

I believe we should make David an honorary member of this forum, he certainly would have been lurking here, but he never said much, he was too busy diving. Stuart, what do you think about a section to honor the fallen among us. A place where we can drop a note, share a remembered dive, or leave a picture to remember the pioneers who are now diving with the saints. Guys like David Shaw, or Garret Weinberg. What do the rest of you think?

Sounds like a good idea. They shared our passion, why not share the memories.
Never met Dave, but he seemed like decent chap worth remembering.
I spend several hours chatting with Garrett here in CA a few years ago, he was very kind guy. I gladly write a few lines to share that experience.
