    Hi Ken,

My initial setup is basically opposite to yours.....off-board QD bottom bailout gas to the BOV, Hypoxic DIL on board with off-board to manifold & BOV.

You raise a good point that my setup would only have hypoxic mix at the surface from my on-board at the end of the dive if removing QD off-board & handing stages to boat whilst in water. This would not be good.

I dive from hard boats with diver lifts so my stages remain connected until safely seated back on board. I had not taken this into account, I need to be aware of this....so would anyone with a similar setup.

I assume your onboard DIL is only there as a breathable gas at surface to the BOV.

Do you have a separate additional bailout bottom stage as well as the off board hypoxic DIL or is it the same tin. What's your bailout philosophy with this setup?

No agenda here just re-evaluating my setup in light of your post. Thx.

    David.

If you use a BOV, then your immediate reaction to any bailout situation is to switch the BOV. It needs to be pure reflex/muscle memory. No thinking about whether to switch it or grab a second stage somewhere. Some folks prefer a second on a bungee around their neck instead of a BOV. That is a matter of personal choice. Just make sure that second stage is connected to a gas that is breathable.

There was a death here a few years ago from exactly the same thing you described -- a diver with hypoxic gas connected at the surface who developed a problem at the start of the dive. It only took a few seconds for unconsciousness and death. The lesson is that if you have a BOV, you must ALWAYS have it connected to a breathable gas at any depth. How you accomplish that is a matter of opinion.

I include my onboard gas in my bailout calculations. It is accessible through the manifold and also OC through an octo/inflator in case the loop or BOV are compromised. By including the onboard 4L tank, I can reduce the amount of offboard bailout a bit and often end up with one fewer tin than my buddies. Either that or I can have an extra deco gas, resulting in shorter deco time. The onboard is either my rich or middle deco gas. My only deep bailout is the same offboard cylinder I use for deep dil, so I just make certain it is big enough for dil use as well as bailout.

Once again, this is only my personal preference and I am not making any recommendation or trying to sell anyone. And note the wisdom from DSix36 in my signature line.

I knew that would bite me in the butt. I hereby retract all nice references to Don in the past and future.

Denial is the first stage in the healing process. Followed by Anger, Bargaining, Depression, and finally - Acceptance.
