    The dive trip that didn't

After looking into various destinations to dive at for this years vacation (2 yrs in a row Curacao, last year Grand Cayman), I looked into this "new" for us (wife & I) destination where she could hang on the beach and I could go and dive. I contacted the dive shop, where "ccr support" was listed on their website...2L tin rentals, fills (O2, Helium, Air) and "bailout tank rentals". The shop listed that you could do all shore diving without ever getting on a boat! So in my emails to this shop I asked if this is ccr, or mixed diving and was told it was mixed diving. I then asked what happens if an OC diver runs low on gas and was told that everyone must ascend I then sent another email asking if I could just rent the 2L's, bailout and get gas from them and I'd go off on my own. The owner responded basically asking for my resume (cv for you Brits) and said he discouraged diving solo. I replied that if there were CCR divers only, there wouldn't be a problem then. He never said he wouldn't rent me the cylinders, so I said "thanks" and "see you in 1 1/2 weeks".

Go on our little trip and go to the shop. Shop girl says owner returning in 10 mins. After 1 hr, owner shows up & comes in and walks right by us, saying nothing. 10mins later he comes & says "which one of you is Franco?" That would be me! He's in a foul attitude and bitches that I never notified him that I was coming to the island. I mentioned my email and he wanted to argue it. I just asked him if he could help me and he said "I don't want to rent equipment for solo, it's a liability issue, you want me to call Tom?" Scratching my head and trying to put together who this Tom is?" I started saying about my emails & he never mentioned that he would not rent to me. He got onto this Tom thing again about 4 other times. I finally figured out that he wanted to call Tom Mount on me.... You gotta be F'n kidding me, right? Back and forth a few more times and his attitude just got even worse, if that was possible! So.... we left the shop and no diving for me! While I won't mention the shop or knucklehead owner/ccr instructor openly (although I should!!), I will by PM if you want to know who & where this place is. Oh, one more thing...if the shop lists 40cuft "bailout tanks" as one of their listed items for rent, would you expect it to be rigged with mounting hardware or would you expect just a 40cuft cylinder with a boot on the bottom of it?

Sounds like a right dork to me, if was worried about you diving CCR solo why didnt he dive with you (as you say he was a CCR instructor) yes I would expect all the mounting equipment on bail out tanks...

I can't understand how someone can treat a customer like that. Its my customers that keep me CCR diving I will always escort them...gives me an excuse to have fun and use my unit...

Oh and when I hand out my bail out tanks I expect to get my stainless (expensive) double ended pistion clips back and not left on the customers wing Just a point from the other side of the counter.

I always travel with a cam band type stage strap, just in case. I've had that experience before. The rest sounds like he was just a dickhead. Should have told him you're from Jersey, where solo is required.

Please mention the desitination, even if you don't want to name the shop. But Linda has given the green light to fire away.

Well since Linda has given the go-ahead:

Destination was in Puerto Rico and the shop was: Puerto Rico Technical Diving Center. The owner & person who needs to work on his customer skills is Tony Cerezo.

Here's the pertinent portion of an email that Tony sent in reply to my inquiry:

    From: PRTDC01 [mailto:prtdc01@gmail.com]
    Sent: Wednesday, April 11, 2012 10:07 AM
    To: Franco
    Subject: Re: a few questions

"I do have cylinders available to rent but I strongly discourage diving any CCR by yourself! Unfortunately we had a CCR fatality in PR in the past month (not one of our divers or any relation to our shop). It was on a Sentinel Opticon."

My response in email to his email:

    From: Franco
    Sent: Wednesday, April 11, 2012 10:44 AM
    To: 'PRTDC01'
    Subject: RE: a few questions

"I do dive solo often and although it’s not my preferred way to dive, sometimes it’s my only option if I want to dive. In my email to Brenda, she replied saying that in mixed OC/CCR diving with your OP, that the CCR diver must ascend at the same time as the OC diver. I’m a bit dismayed at this because, as you know, an OC diver (especially the vacation type diver) runs low on gas rather quickly. Is it common for CCR divers to be with your OP? That would solve both problems of solo’ing and diving in a mixed group. Of course if you have any other suggestions, I would appreciate it.

    See you in 1 1/2wks.

    Thanks again

    Franco"

I checked the website again and didn't see the reference to the "bailout" but I do have the offer in an email. @Ken--as I've been to different destinations that offered b/o rentals & the rigging was on the b/o's, I just assumed it would be the same at this place. Maybe I should've pushed the issue? When I told him I didn't bring rigging with me, his response was "you didn't bring your rigging? Who did your training?" Then he threatened to "call Tom" on me again. I didn't know that was covered in any training manual. Then again, that turned out to be a non issue as he refused to rent me anything. Also, like Rod said, this guy could've made an offer to dive with me or any offer... but didn't. Just got a real bad attitude from him (and some say Jersey ppl are bad!!! geez!!). Besides my wife, there was another couple with us who wanted to use his services to do a "discover dive". Needless to say, he lost their business too and most likely will tell others about the attitude of this guy. Anyway, as you can see in the email portions, at no time did he say he would not rent me cylinders. He only refused, based on "liability issues" AFTER I got to there.

Sounds like this Tony is a bit of a tosser. I had someone pull the "I'm going to ring so & so (from a tec training agency)" line on me in Egypt a few years ago - this idiot got a surprise when so & so told him to pull his head in as I was quite capable of pulling off the solo photography dive that I wanted to do.

You hit it bang on in your post! We do 1 destination vacation per year and this was it. $1200US on the flight for my wife and I; $2100US for the condo rental; $600US for food. Because we had connecting flights, I checked the rEvo, instead of carrying it on as hand luggage like I usually do. Bought a storm case for $130US & $60US for checked luggage fee. So..$4090US to NOT dive. My wife, who is so neutral that I call her Switzerland, got out in the car and said "what a F'n as*hole".
