Quaternary ammonium coumpounds were used for many years as the active ingedient for disinfection in contact lens solutions. If you have been wearing contact lenses in the 1990's and early 2000's you would have bought cleaning solutions with Quaternary ammonium.

They were effective at removing the nasties on contact lenses but over time people were getting sensitivities to the Quaternary ammonium and so other compunds were developed.
