Winter 2011 Florida cave diving trip report by Shipwreck Explorers

We once again spent Christmas and New Year in Florida cave diving. We had some amazing conditions, river levels and flow were down, water clarity was excellent and we are able to get into any caves. Orange Grove was actually a bit tricky as the water levels have fallen down below the steps and there was a pretty good hike up the rocks. We dove the usual caves – Peacock, Little River, Ginnie, and Madison Blue and also ventured into the Cow Cave and Telford. The Cow Cave is a really neat cave; you need to be a member of NSS-CDS in order to get access to it through Dive Outpost diveshop but it’s worth the fee and the climb down the hill. The Telford might be my new favorite cave; it is shallow so you can stay in long time and the cave changes every few hundred feet… almost like being in a different cave. The access to the cave itself is a little tricky as the land access has been closed so you need to go through the river. If you don’t have a scooter I found it easier to walk in the water as close to the shore as possible instead of swimming against the flow the entire time. Yes, you occasionally do trip over trees but hey, you are just going to fall into the water so no big deal. It took us about 10 to 15 min to get up the stream – 400ft or so. Well worth the effort and it is nice and clear right now while the river is down.

On this trip we stayed at Michael Angelo’s house Chateau H20 that is located close to Ginnie Springs. It is a nice place to stay, it has three bedrooms, two bathrooms, kitchen, living room with satellite TV and WIFI, washer, drier, wonderful battery charger station inside, and scooter charger outlets outside… parking right next to the house, hanging rack for drysuits… also a fire pit and a grill outside… all that a diver could wish for.
