You can set it so all comments must be approved by you before being published - think thats the easiest thing.

Yeah, I had this problem on my Blogger blog; turning on comment moderation stopped it.

I hated to do it, but had to.

    Stuart,

It may just be me, but how on earth can I switch on comment approval? All I have found is that I can disable comments completely. Please help!

Not sure what blogging software is being used to run the blog here, but most support text verification (not sure if that is the right term) which is the annoying thing where commenters have to type a string in that appears in a picture. I have not seen an automated method to get around the decent versions of this yet. OCR isn't good enough to do it in general.

This prevents automated spam (most of it). If some human wants to post a link to a v1gra site, then they still can. In most cases, the comment spam should stop immediatly.

(sorry if this is an old issue that has been delt with already!)

Unfortunately there are ways around that too... Instead of OCR humans are used. Try joining a FREE!!!!!!!! porn side. Before you get access they'll prompt you to complete a few puzzles to verify whether you're an adult. Suuuuuuuuure....
As the majority of males thinks about sex one time a day (all day) that approach is guaranteed to work. Next you visit such a site know you're effectively spamming yourself :D .

    Yah, I know.

That is actually the only way to really get around it in mass at this point... use humans. But that requires a more targeted bot (you can't have your universal - do_blog_spam_bot). Now you need one that works for a specific site or blog engine.

If the web server hosting the blog is setup right, the bot will have to download the image to its own server (not just link it from your server - You can accomplish this by restricing the referer that is allowed for the image generating script in apache).

Just a thought. Sometimes little barriers have a big effect on a bots and other automated systems. Most of the time, the bot authors just search for easier targets rather than adapt their bots to every sites specific quirks.

In any case, it stopped the problem on my blogger.com account without any manual moderation.

    Stuart,

Any progress on the blog-spam front? I've just deleted 50? or so spam comments. It really is annoying. Also, your blogs are heavily spammed as well (http://schford.rebreatherworld.com/post/1/120)

    Thanks!

    Re: blogs: comment spam

I was getting ready to post updates. I have now over 1,200 spam additions. So, I first have to spend my time removing them. Is there a fast, easy way to get rid of all of them at once?

I don't get the spam filter thing. After I mark them, they still don't go away.
