    Swedish wreck Eric Nordevall

I thought I would share an ongoing project in Sweden. There are many English divers here and the wreck has some English history.

The wreck is called Eric Nordevall and she is a fiddle steamer, she was used in the Swedish chanel, Göta Kanal. It runs straight threw Sweden and made it possible to go by boat from Gothenburg to Stockholm.

Göta Kanal is narrow so Eric Nordevall was built with a special hull to fit the water locks. If you look at her from above she looks like a violin, her waist is pulled in so the fiddle wheels could get closer to the hull. By doing that she didn’t get so wide.

She was fitted with two balance steam engines with English design. The usual steam engine uses the pressure from the steam to push the piston in the cylinder, this one works the opposite way. The steam heated the piston so it moved up the cylinder and then it was rapidly cooled down with water to go back down.
She sank 1856 when she ran aground in the lake Vättern.
In the beginning of 1980 two brothers fund her almost intact. It became a popular dive site in the 90´s but after several raids and looting attempts the county board closed her from all diving in 1999.
Special permits have been issued in 2001 and 2003 but since then there has been no allowed diving on the wreck.
I have been working for 1½ years to get a permit to dive her after reading an article about another project in Sweden involving wrecks that has none or limited diving.
They had made it possible to dive these wrecks by creating cultural reservoirs around the wrecks. In these reservoirs they could make their own rules and make it possible for special partners to guide divers on these wrecks.
My hopes are to do the same with Eric Nordevall.
We are working with the Swedish maritime museum, the county board and Forsviks Varv. Forsviks Varv is building a full size replica with the only working balance steam engine in the world. All measurements and data come from previous wreck dives, and now ours. There are no blueprints available.
We did two dives this year to know her status for the coming planning this winter.
During this dives we also documented chosen parts for Forsviks Varv.
To make this wreck into a cultural reservoir we need to do extensive documentation. This is our main goal in 2011. We are going to make a photomosaique from different angles, video documentation of different parts, take measurements and also a video for our own interest.
Here is some pictures from our two dives and a short video clip. The majority of the project divers are rebreather divers :)

Randy this is the way all wrecks look in Sweden ;)
You should come here! More to look at than rocks in a cave

Next year it will be 155years since she sank. Like you can see on the video the paint is still on her in some places.

The project is going to start next spring and we will be diving and documenting for 1-2 years.

Fantastic work there Erik ! Good luck with the project.

I holidayed near Lake Vattern when I was a boy, Tidaholm and Hjo were 2 places that I remember - a beautiful country and fantastic wrecks it seems too!

We have finally got our English site up, thanks to a few people on Yorkshire-divers that helped us with the proofreading!
Hope you enjoy it and we will try to translate more post as fast as we possibly can!
