My Experience Getting Bent / Importance of DAN Insurance and being Hydrated

Some of you may or many not know that I recently went on a trip to Truk Lagoon for a week aboard a live-aboard. During that trip I got bent on the second day of diving. This was due to dehydration and fatigue. Dive profiles were executed perfectly and no deco's were missed.

Here is a link to incident I wrote up. My Experience Getting Bent

Most importantly are some conclusions/thoughts at the end of the report.

Please be safe and if you don't have it, please consider carrying DAN insurance. Without it I would spent over $70,000 out of my own pocket.

    Good Diving,

Bummer. Hope you are OK and not suffering any long term effects.

I agree re DAN insurance. Id be about $90k out by now if wasnt for the measly $99 per year or whatever it costs.

Glad you are ok Gary and thanks for sharing your story.

Not the first story of a hit on a RB attributed to dehydration and fatigue. We are careful to manage our consumables, watch our po2, plan our bailouts, but it seems we forget to take care of ourselves in such a attentive way.

Clive, it's worth noting here that in Oz it's covered by ambulance insurance (if you need a helicopter) and Medicare for the chamber. DAN insurance is useful for those overseas liveaboards though.

When mine expires, I tend not to to renew till shortly before the next overseas dive trip so as to maximize my value for money.

Gary, thanks for the welcome reminder and all the best.

Thanks Gary. So happy you are OK. After 23 years of diving in various parts of the world, I just joined Dan tonight and purchased their insurance thanks to you.

    Cheers,

    Peter

    Thanks Gary

Yes, if you are going to be serious about diving, dan is a must.

Dive long enough and the following will apply...

It's not if you are going to get bent, it's when.....

    Sometimes worse than others!
