Anatomy of a "HIT" by ADM Staff Photojournalist John Rawlings

    Anatomy of a "HIT"
by ADM Staff Photojournalist John Rawlings
When it happened, I was stunned…the hit was completely unexpected because the dives had been so uneventful and simple recreational level dives like we have done literally thousands of times before. The sudden numbness in my right arm had caught my attention…

    Thanks, guys!

This happened back in June of 2006, and I still remember certain moments of that week like it was yesterday.

Thank you John, your bladder disfunction brought back memories of my bend in Scapa last year. I could only partly clear my bladder after the hit.

Did you get the PFO fixed?

    Warm regards

    Steve

This article is older - the hit happened 4 years ago in June of 2006. At the time that I wrote it the docs had "found" a pfo with an initial test. We were all set to get the surgery done, but then they did another, more advanced, test to specifically locate it and determine its size and shape in anticipation of the surgery. I was sedated and completely out of it since they were examining me both inside and out. Well, they couldn't find a pfo!

They told me that the first test must have been "in error", but I often wonder if I might have a small pfo that only opens under strain, such as the excertion that I experienced in getting out of my fins and gear on the bouncing ladder. No test since has been able to locate one, though.

Did you try the TCD test ? Relatively inexpensive and they do measure under a valsava.

I did too, and was interested, because they didn't find any bubbles under stress, but was wondering if John had had a similar negative test ...
