    Nylon Vs Polyester line

    Hi All,

Just wondering if anyone uses polyester braided line instead of nylon braided line?? Im talking 3-4mm thickness line, not the standard 2mm.

For me its easier to get hold of 3-4mm Poly line than Nylon, the quotes I have had for Nylon are astronomical!! (c £150 for 200M)

    Any negatives with Poly??

Any sensible ways of getting good Nylon line at a reasonable price?

    Thanks for your help.

    Pete

It depends on what you are using it for?
Polys biggest drawback underwater... is that it floats.

    Hi Pete,

I've just bought some 4mm nylon line (not for reels) from ebay. I've also asked for some 1mm, 2mm, 3mm samples. It's much, much cheaper than your quote.

Think outside the box: Better, tougher, more abrasion resistant, less expensive line is available from fishing supply sources. What you are looking for is Dacron braided fishing line- also marketed as ‘planar board‘ line. 130 pound test is roughly equivalent to the common #24 line, but slightly smaller in diameter = more on your spool. Same for 200 pound test which is roughly equivalent to the larger size spool line (#36?). I’ve been toying with the idea of putting two different colors on my reel next time I re-spool, say hi vis orange for the first 150 ft and high vis yellow for the rest (CHARTREUSE = hi-vis yellow). Some sources pulled from a quick search (I’ve bought the 300 meter 100 kg test spool from bass pro, just $40. Plenty to re-spool several reels! ):

I should have not abbreviated polyester to "poly", because it can be confused with polyethylene, as above, which floats. Just to clarify, sorry for the confusion, but I mean polyester.

    Hi Janos,

I've bought some of the same 3mm line (in green) of ropeseller previously. It is very good quality, but it's the hollow braid flat stuff. I dunno how that will fare on a reel, but perfect for everything else. V reasonable too.

The problem comes in trying to get solid braid nylon.

Having said that, I could always put the hollow braid onto a reel and see how it fares.

    Hey Pete,

As I went through the same route after doing some courses with Martyn..

Kent Tooling made me up a reel (which I think they still make now.) and got some suitable 3/4mm white nylon 'rope' from all places - B&Q - still using it now although it's not very white any more...

    Cheers
    Simon

I see. I was actually thinking Polypropylene.
