That they still will sell to homebuilders? That this market fails the risk/profit limit?

According to Martin Parker (on Inspiration mailing list) this is not an April Fools joke. APD apparently knew it was happening and "have a replacement cell scheduled to continue when the existing stocks are used".

    Re: Teledyne's market

    What's in it for Teledyne?

10000 active rebreathers with 3 cells that are changed every 18 months with an ex works price of say $50 we get a gross sales of 10000 * 3 * 50 / 1.5 = one million USD.

Teledyne say that there sales 2008 was allmost 1.9 billion USD, an that their average profit margin is 11,5%. Thus we are talking about a profit in the $100000 range.

My guess is that their legal advice is that they have much more to loose in the rebreather market.

Are they not suppose to continue supplying cells to the rebreather manufactures? I think only OEM production and direct sales channels are disappearing.

Add into the profit calculation that they are precieved to have deep enough pockects to be named in any law suit involving a rebreather death; Barrett, Robles, etc.

Anyone think about the result if the other cell manufacturers followed the industry leader in abandoning the market.

    1) incredibly high prices for replacement cells via the black market.
    2) all of a sudden alot of CCR boat anchors.
    3) MBA course studies on how to wipe out an industry in a few short months.

Well at least we would not have to worry about the high fatality rate except for a few idiots that might consider diving without any bailout...sorry I mean cells.

    Scary thought.

One aspect of this is that O2 cells were never originally designed for Hyperbaric RB application. eledyne have produced cells like the R22BUD to overcome this.
Given most if not all cell manufacturers provide a warranty with cells, you may well find the return rate from RB users has a huge roll to play in this decision
