    Question Dive trip deposits

A question on deposits: If you sign up to a dive trip, you pay a deposit. This holds your place and is some insurance for the organiser in case you don't pay the rest.

So, you can't make the trip. But, you find a replacement, who also pays a deposit and the trip is full and goes ahead. The organiser hasn't lost any money and the trip was a success.

Where I come from, you'd get your deposit back as soon as the replacement pays up. What are the rules where you come from?

When I was diving DIR a lot, your word was your bond :), peeps paid even if they could not make the trip. If you found a substitute, they had to have the approval of the group.

This worked, everyone knew where they stood.

Club (BS-AC) diving is a bit different, people seem to find it hard to understand why they should pay the balance if they don't make the trip, some even ask for their deposit back - which I'd only do under exceptional circumstances.

Our chairman (I'm DO) rightly says that peeps would (probably) get holiday insurance if going abroad which would pay up in the event of illness, so why not on a trip to Scapa?

    Hi Paul,

If they found an acceptable replacement, did they get the deposit back?

Around here, if you confirm a spot on the trip you owe the full fare. Some boats go as far to say that you haven't booked until you've paid in full. Depending on how well they know you, a captain may hold a spot for you even though you haven't paid in full. Failure to pay will guarantee that you'll never dive off that boat again.

Getting a stand-in can aslo be a bit difficult. For the deeper trips, the stand-in needs to have a reputation with the captain to fill your spot (some trips are invitation only and filling your spot with an unknown is frowned upon). For shallower trips, it's easier to fill. Money is generally then between you and the replacement.

Yes, unless they came to an arrangement with the purchaser where they sold the place to the replacement slightly cheaper, as long as the total amount went to the trip organiser.
