If anyone feels like organising a rebreather trip out to the coral sea, count me in. Remains some of the most impressive diving I've done even when limited to 30m and 50 minutes. Would love to do a trip with a couple of long dives a day.

I'd imagine the O2 would be a bigger problem than the He, unless doing a bunch of deep stuff. Couple of 12litres of premix, top the onboard tanks off with air after a couple of dives. He content would be low, but better than 1%

Re: RB Friendly liveaboards on the Barrier Reef - Split thread

    Now we're talking.

Untill now (stopped trying about half a year ago) I just ran into a brick wall as far as Cairns and rebreathers went. I worked there as DI for a few years, and nothing, really nothing ever worked/ got off the ground. I virtually gave up.

But it seems that Lancer is making many many new friends with his new boat....

Quite happy with the Undersea Explorer stepping into the next century. Maybe it will be a stimulance for the other operators to pull their thumb out....
Hope they can break the Cairns "laid back" (read lazy and backwards) attitude of changing as little as possible, and definatly not trying anything else the flogging intro dives and open water courses to backpackers....

    Denz.

PS did that sound bitter? :D

Like Mike, I'd also be interested in heading up to Cairns for some rebreather diving. As I'd be driving up from Brisbane, I'd even bring along a few AL80s of helium and a transfill whip. The only question is who's boat and when?

Getting permission for us to dive on commercially built breathers up there is gonna be hard enough.

Getting someone who is diving a homebuild, is probably pushing your luck just a little too far... :o

Had to laugh last time I was in Cairns, there was an instructor wearing his Aladin Pro in the pub...

Now, I wear my Mares Nemo 24x7, and I've seen plenty of mosquito's, spyder's, stingers, etc, but wearing a full-sized Aladin Pro out, that just took the cake.

I'm thinking next time I'm up there, I'll wear my VR3, but I probably would get kicked out of the pub for bringing in a lethal weapon...

Hi Mike, Golden Dawn out of Port Moresby goes to Portlock reef and Eastern Fields in the northern Coral Sea. I've been there, top notch diving, great viz, very sharky-Great Hammers, Tigers, Silver Tips, etc. Captain Craig dives an MCCR, his boat is excellent and he always has O2 and usually HE. He's happy to have other CCR divers to dive with. Our routine was 2-3 long dives a day, no restrictions on time or depth and the RIB drivers have got eagle eyes. I'll be going back sometime in the next year. Let me know if you get a group together...

    Yikes Ross.....What have we started!!!

I agree with Ross and just about everyone else who has ever tried to dive rebreathers out of North Queensland that the general consensus about rebreathers has been somewhat less than favourable.

I am sure Ross and I are going to work to get this changed as it's about time we came out of the dark ages and moved on. Failing that I have the option of using my boat when it's up and running.

It's time for a change up here, It's not going to be easy but long overdue.

    Regards,

    Lance
