Dude, what evidence do you have for this apparent bullshit allegation?

Last I heard, 2 days ago, it was still sat on the reef at Pohnpei.

Yes, still sat on the reef. It -hasnt- sunk so the OP should be clear about what the Thorfinns status is.

    Jim,
last time I heard (a few days ago), The hole was patched but they couldn't pull the thofin off the reef.. (she is sitting hard on the sand bottom)They were waiting for a bigger ship to try again..

Once they float it the repais should not be that big a deal.. The ship is a steamer so the engines should just need flushing, The cabins (on the lower 2 decks) will have to be redone and the boat painted but otherwise once its floated repairs shouldn't be that bad.. The thorfinn's hull is quite thick and the report was that there was about a 1ft gash near the engine room.. I'm betting its back before the end of the yrar unless something goes seriously wrong..

If this was the odyssey it would have been long gone, from what I have heard the odyssey hull is quite thin and in poor shape.. I was told by several people that when they (odyssey) were up in the phillippines (for repairs) around the same time as the thorfinn that they need a complete new hull but declined and just got it patched..

Um, even steam engines don't like salt water. I think your assessment might be a little optimistic.

Its a big boiler!!! so its not going to be effected the same way a diesel engine is effected, the exposed moving parts are probably going to have some problems (dont know what materials they are made of) but the engine itself will probably be ok if they get it dry within reason..

If they did a hydrazine layup of the boilers as a precaution...should be ok...but I have no immidiate love for the thorfinn, but the owner has a lot into that ship, plus was one of cousteau's voyages...the reduction gear is gonna be the real money maker or breaker,,,that's the most EXPENSIVE piece on the whole ship

Looking at the size and age of it I'd bet it hasn't got a reduction gearbox because it will most likely be a steam reciprocating engine.

None the less, Boulers, engines and ancillary machinery and all other electrical equipment isn't designed to be submerged in sea water.

It's not going to be good whatever it is.

Someone is guna' be in trouble

Just did a quick bit of research.......As I thought. Nothing like steam

    Machinery:
    • Main Engine:
      • F.M.V Double compound steam reciprocating - 2,500 h.p. @ 140 rpm
    • Boilers:
      • Foster Wheeler Corp (2 x 18,000 lbs./hr each @ 250 psi working press. 600 deg F superheat).
    • Generators:
      • 2 x Detroit Diesel - Model 6-71N, 100KW, 440 VAC, 3 phase each
      • 208 VAC, 3 phase SGL PHS
      • 115 VAC 3 phase SGL PHS
