FDEP wants more comments on the Lake Worth proposal to pump nutrient-laden wastewater

I received the email below today, which should be of particular concern to all S.C.R.U.B. divers. I believe it is of utmost importance to try to reduce wastewater discharged onto Florida's coral reef system, and not to further increase such discharge. Therefore, please take the time to send an email to Tim Powell at Tim.Powell@dep.state.fl.us, and voice your opinion.

FDEP wants more comments on the Lake Worth proposal to pump nutrient-laden wastewater into a coral reef ecosystem.

At a public meeting held Monday, paid consultants for the City of Lake Worth tried to convince a standing room only crowd that a little bit more pollution dumped on an already stressed coral reef would not hurt anything. They argued the Palm Beach County coastline already receives about 15 tons of wastewater discharge a day, which combined with the effects of pollution and global warming already causes considerable stress on the coral reefs. They say the Lake Worth discharge would be incidental.

However, the environmental coalition presented internationally recognized experts in ocean sciences to refute the assessment. Dr. Thomas Goreau, the Harvard-educated president of the nonprofit Global Coral Reef Alliance, and Dr. Mike Risk, professor of environmental sciences at McMasters University in Canada, vehemently argued that there is no such thing as -a safe level- of ocean contaminants. A scientist from Harbor Branch Oceanographic Institute presented data showing the reef was already dangerously close to the tipping point.

At a time when the reefs of Florida are all but dead from nutrient overloads, FDEP is ready to issue a permit to dump just a little bit more poison on our reefs.

FDEP wastewater permit writer Tim Powell asked for more public comment. He wants to hear from you. He requested your personal emails be sent directly to him and not from the Reef Rescue preformatted email sender.

You can send your personal comment to Tim Powell at: Tim.Powell@dep.state.fl.us

I can't believe these people!?!? It's the mentality of out of sight, out of mind. If I burry it and can't see it, then all is good. A-holes.

    I'm sending a letter.
