    new wreck in the making?

Went for a drive today to Newcastle (Australia), 190km north of where I live. Since last weekend we have a coal bulk carrier on the beach there. The 40,000 t ship was beached when it missed the entrance to the port by approx 400m in a storm. The captain obviously decided that the beach was better than the reef a couple hundred meters south ... Initially the ship was beached 100m off the beach, but the waves have now pushed her at an angle of less than 90deg to the beach and much higher up. Unfortunately, the ship was entirely empty (no ballast!), one of the reasons why the wind pushed it past the port entrance. Being empty, the ship went right up the beach. If there were no waves you could walk to the bulge under the bow without your feet getting wet! They have now managed to fill one of the holds with seawater to firmly plant her on the sand.

    What a sight ... !!!

Like many other divers, I am dreaming of a new artificial reef for diving They will hopefully get the 700t of fuel off the ship at some stage.

At the moment, they are planning to pull her off the beach during a spring tide at the end of June, as they will not be ready this Monday/Tuesday. The plan will involve 4 ships (one being a big anchor handler). But because the "Pahsa Bulker" was absolutely empty when she was beached, this might not work as planned.

Also: The outer hull shows creases on the port side (under the "K" in "Bulkers") and starboard (under the "T" in "Lauritzen").

The Port Authority has a news release site: Newcastle Port Corporation

FYI: All crew were winched off right after the beaching and all are well. The public have decided this is a new tourist attraction and have been out in force.

Got 4 days in Newcastle for a wedding next week, staying at the Crowne Plaza on the foreshore not far from there, looking forward to wandering down and having a look. If any body knows Newcastle from the observation tower on the foreshore you can see the remains of the Sygna, the last bulk carrier that stuffed up in the type of storm like that in 1974. Its wheel house and stern section are still on the beach on the Stockton Side of the harbour (about 10 km up the beach)

Hoping if this ones falls apart it does so in about 50 m of water:p

Hmmm - my vote is for the prop at +100msw. Or, how about a nice list to either starboard or port side? That way we would have some deck at depth to stay amused with.

Personally I think the only way that's getting off the beach is in a taxi.

    It's HUGE!

How about a work party with some shovels to try and dig out the sand behind it so that it slips off the beach then it can be 'our' wreck? Who is with me?

Weather has been terrible here and I am experiencing withdrawal...sorry.
