Hi, can you tell me what weight (circa) you are using on your Draeger Ray?

In salt water (Red Sea and South-China Sea) with 3-mm wetsuit — about 13 kg
In salt water (Barenz Sea) with drysuit and 150-gr thinsulate — about 22 kg or little less
In frash water with drysuit and 150-gr thinsulate — about 17 kg

Re: Draeger Ray weights

i am guessing the reason you are asking is because you think the weight you are using is alot, i dont remember exactly what i use on a ray but i do remember it is significanly more than the dolphin, it is a unit that needs ALOT of lead.

Thanks for the response Simon and yes I think I'm using a lot. I did a trial dive in the swimming pool (in a drysuit) with my closed Ray using 7kg of lead, it has the extra weight of 2 Draegar Lar cylinders complete with first stages etc. and it seemed I had enough weight, but then I tried my SCR Ray and couldn't even hope to get down with 12kg. It seems a lot of weight to me, admittedly drysuit diving is reasonably new to me (many years of warm water oc diving) and I don't have a lot of experience to know how much difference that would make, but still what am I missing?

Regards...Paul

Wow that's a lot of lead, no wonder I couldn't get down with 12kg wearing a drysuit in the swimming pool! I have to try again.

Many thanks Andrei.

Is that really the weight of the lead you carry? Or is it weight of unit and lead?

I have a Ray laying around in pieces, only got it wet a few times some years ago before it was scavenged for parts. But from what I (vaguely) recall it took around 10 kg of lead to dive it SCR with drysuit and 100-gr thinsulate in fresh water (hmm, perhaps that was with the SS-backplate conversion too, don't remember).

You know Jaap I think Andrei is about right, My closed Ray is 27kg with a 5 litre bailout cylinder which is about 10 kg more than the SCR Ray and I had 7 kg of lead with a drysuit and in the swimming pool which equates to 17kg of weight! and it didn't seem too heavy but it sure sounds like a lot of weight!

Yes. It`s weight for lead only. But drysuit was little larger, than i need. I think, that 17 kilos must be ought for salt water.

Re: Draeger Ray weights

I am half fearful to do it to my complete Ray, but has anyone gone in and cut out all the foam, perhaps replacing it with simple plastic sheet?
I wonder what sort of differece that would make. I'd imagine a pretty big one, as you have the foam across the top, all round the scrubber and in the flap that comes from underneath the tank. I will only do it once I resolve that I will never need to sell the Ray.

Hmm, now I think about it, I'll get the scissors out at the weekend!

Dave

Re: Draeger Ray weights

I'm using about 32lbs (14.5kg) in salt water with a 5/7mm semidry and up to 40lbs (18kg) with a neoprene drysuit.

Interested to know what difference removing the foam has - not sure the wife will be too pleased with me taking the scissors to the Ray though...
