Is cleaning the Draeger Dosage Unit's orfices a good idea?

I have had some orfices that were not flowing at the proper rate. To fix them I soaked them in vinegar for a couple of days. The orfices then flow at the proper rate.

Is this a good idea or should the orifces be replaced once they do no flow at the correct rate? I do have some replacements on order but am curious if I will run into problems using using 'cleaned' orfices? Thanks for the feedback.

Clean them, by all means. Might be worth your while getting an ultrasonic bath to make sure all residue is removed.

Re: Is cleaning the Draeger Dosage Unit's orfices a good idea?

A while ago on here someone posted that if it clogs once it probably will again. I would be more interested in what caused the clog in the first place.

I had a 50% jet clog, I replaced it [Tecme, naturally], but I'll give your vinegar trick a try.

Now where did I put that jet...

When I had mine serviced a couple of years ago they soaked them in diet coke.. Yep thats right "diet coke", not coke zero or any other varient...

Seem to remember being warned about vinegar but can't recall why..

Must say it worked fine and all jets were spot on with flow rates.

Regards
Karl

I have seen chrome stripped off brass with vinegar.

Wow! No need to bring vinegar on a live-aboard. Fix your rebreather with a diet coke. Not bad.....

I think that 'white' vinegar is OK, but brown [malted] isn't.

white vinegar is perfect to clean the jets.
but don't leave them for a couple of days in there. the chrome will come off than.
one hour is normaly more than enough...

Use white vinegar for an hour, do not leave overnight. Also do not put the jets into an ultrasonic bath as this can damage the crystal in them! You will definately need new jets then!
Always check the flow rates when setting up.

I recently had some problems with blocked jets and it turned out to be a bad supply of oxygen - they supplied welding grade in med grade tanks! Didnt notice until we used some at 80% for deco then it tasted like s**t!!

I cleaned with vinegar and all working Ok now for several hours diving.

Re: Is cleaning the Draeger Dosage Unit's orfices a good idea?

Crystals ? Can you tell us more, it's the first time I hear that. For me vinegar was not a bad idea (white pure vinegar of course, not balsamico :-), but I've also heard that an ultrasonic bath would be ok.

Please tell us more...

Cheers
