I had 60 dives befor I tried rebreather, I loved it immeadiatly. You can go on live aboards for a couple of days and get some good diving. be sure to tell them your experience level, and that you eventually want to go to rebreather, don't let them talk you out of Rebreather, it is so much better. Get your Nitrox and advanced. Then find a good instructor, once you see how easy it is you will love it. The big deal is to keep your equipment in top working order, your life depends on it!

I got my cert from PDIC, I would try getting a book on it for my cert I used "Mastering Rebreathers" by Jeffery E. Bozanic, read each chapter very carefully and do all the excersizes after each section. It is not eazy once you get into reading it but it helps you see the benefits, and risks of rebreathers. It also shows you how to take care of the unit until your ready to use it.

Grab a flight to Cozumel find a cheap place to stay and do as many dives as you can (Safely) it is not to expensive from Houston. Get your passport though, Walgreens is cheapest place to get the picture.

Get your skills in top shape before advancing don't rush into rebreather your basic skills and diving safely will always help you with rebreather use.

Re: Drager Dolphin, new.

Hey I might take you up on that although I think Im going to need a lot more in water experience with the OC stuff before diving (no pun intended) into SCR diving. Where do you use your dolphin? Lake travis?

Well just look me up when you get in town!! Austin has some great spots lake travis depth 0-300 Ft most dives in 50-150 ft range 0-20 ft vis. aquerina springs max depth 30 ft but 60-100 ft vis!!
Flower gardens National banks, best in oct with the corral spawn, whale sharks ect..
quarry to dive right here in town depth unknown. best at night in all black gear...
As for the "switch" to rebreather .. i wouldn't worry so much, some things are just the same as o/c inflater hose, breath in breath out .. but the biggest difference I have found is little to no change in neutral buoyancy ( once achieved) from the rebreather system you can really hover.. but if you were to start fresh on a scr rebreather with no open water you wouldn't know the difference.. it would be a bit more task loading study wise and surface side it does take a little more time setting up. it's a pleasure to not have to do all the setup for a 45-1 hr dive i would get off o/c! I'm usually down for 1.5 -2 hrs !! there are tons of posts on the differences and many have worded it much better that I. Rebreather World is a great place to polish your knowledge.. the other main difference was $150 for open water card and $450 for my scr card.. but diving is expensive, right..there are options out the wazzoo when you get into rebreathers but that's a lot of my fun, learning it, playing with it, breaking it, fixing it, then diving it again!!

if I could walk out of a dive shop with a nice new $2000 oc setup or
grab a SCR or CCR off here used, for the same price, and have it checked over. I wouldn't hesitate to decide, rebreathers are the way to go if you want to be one with the water!!

Re: Drager Dolphin, new.

Experience comes with time in the water.

Sites-
San Marcos River- Shallow dive (bring a snorkel-hehe)
Favorite site- one of the few waterfalls you can dive in texas for free.
Pic- http://surfaceintervalscuba.com/Phot...llip%20Big.jpg

Windy Point, Lake Travis (outside of Austin)
Private park with excellent access. Lake is closed right now.

Scubaboard- look up Texas Swamp divers.
Great source of sites and events in Texas.
(Presently site is down.)

Comfort level.
I would recommend at least 100 dives.
Nitrox, Advanced Nitrox, Decompression and a few leadership courses.
Get involved and the time will fly by.

Don’t pass up on the coast diving…
It some of the best in Texas- love the Flower Gardens.

Hope the weather is better.
I was in Rockport for the 4th- we had fireworks for 10 minutes, the fireworks stopped and then it rained like nothing I had seen in ages.

Keep after it…
Another option is Oceanic Adventures in Houston.
They do all kinds of training…

Regards, Andrew
