Medical sorb versus Dive Sorb questions

I am hoping to learn why is it a NO No or frowned upon to use medical grade sorb.
Lots use it without ill effects any more than the approved slime. Is it a Myth, conjured up by suppliers so that they can lighten our wallets a bit more.
Any theories or facts to start the debate.

Re: Medical sorb versus Dive Sorb questions

I use Spherasorb all the time - never had any problems using it.

It may be that 'diving grade' is more efficient (I hope so 'cause it's a lot more expensive), but I just change my medical sorb a bit more often. It's half the price anyway.

YMMV.

Likewise, I tend to offload medical grade early & don't push the time limits on it especially if it sits around too long between dives.

Re: Medical sorb versus Dive Sorb questions

Hi Jeff,
I stopped using it after speaking with John Pennyfather (30 odd years as the RAN's Chief Diving Scientist) who inspected Crusty's Inspo after he died a few years ago. Crusty was using Medisorb so this was looked at as a part of the analysis of his death (not found to be the reason which wasn't surprising to those that knew a bit about how he died). I was shown his test data and the speed at which it fails compared to Sofnolime and Draegersorb was alarming and he strenuously cautioned me against ever using it.

I had no problems with it but when a man that knows as much as he has demonstrated not to use it, I certainly listened.

Re: Medical sorb versus Dive Sorb questions

I use Medisorb at a rate of about 3 hr per Kg in 28 degC water. 1.5 hr per Kg on dives 50m or deeper.

Re: Medical sorb versus Dive Sorb questions

Steve, I wonder why it fails earlier, if that's the case- same compound-maybe rougher granules?

1.5 hr per Kg on dives 50m or deeper. Same, sabgia & pretty standard dives for me, 2 dives & turf it. Always looks like it is only half used pouring out it of the scrubber.

Good question. No idea of an answer though. The only differences I know of between it and diving grade are; moisture content, density and it is a bit rougher as you say. I'm not sure if the composition is exactly the same and there may be more differences but I am far from being any good at industrial chemistry.

Re: Medical sorb versus Dive Sorb questions

Oh, and back to the original thread and the underlying question not actually typed. Tergosorb is diving grade sorb, not medical grade.

Cheers,
Jason.

Re: Medical sorb versus Dive Sorb questions

G'day Jas,
Not tried Tergosorb. I use Medisorb for some years now, hence the question.
Bazza post on DiveOz showed it could be used in both under or above applications. May have give it a whirl if the costs are about the same.

I'm still looking for some one else to tell me a myth buster.
