Sorb- Reduce, Reuse, Recycle?

Not in your rebreather! I am thinking after the diving is over.

One thing I have noticed is that as a rebreather diver I am adding more to waste stream. The sorb has been going into the dust bin and the plastic kegs have been piling up a corner. Secondary uses for this stuff will at least delay their final destination in my local land fill.

In my working life I keep a shop for maintaining some equipment. One clean up consumable I keep around is "floor absorbant" - essentially kitty litter to soak up oil spilled on the floor. I'm thinking I will not have to buy another bag of floor absorbant as long as I am rebreather diving.

What use have you put your old sorb and kegs to?

Steve

Re: Sorb- Reduce, Reuse, Recycle?

Steve, greetings,
sitting here, 6:30 AM on a sunday morning, waiting for my ride to go up into the mountains for some skiiing....and It's SNOWing in seattle, WAHOOOOO!

I have been pondering the same thing and haven't come up with much. When i'm done with a pack of sorb, I go for a little walk around the yard, sprinkling it in the places i'm not so worried about. The grass seems to handle taking it directly, i've heard it even sweetens the soil. I'm not tilling it into our veggies bed yet but I do also tuck it under bushes and such...hasn't killed anything yet!

Re: Sorb- Reduce, Reuse, Recycle?

A little bit of work on sorb containers with a box cutter and they make handy tubs/bins for storage of dive gear on the shelves in the shed.

Lemon trees like spent sorb. So do OC divers still on deco

Re: Sorb- Reduce, Reuse, Recycle?

has anyone thought/ tried to use it as the catalyst for making bio-diesel?

I do not know the details, just that a strong base, normally seom form of OH is used in the process...

wondering if it would work...

interestingly enough, this question has come up and there are a few bio-diesel enthusiasts on this board. The short answere is that it won't work...not strong enough/correct composition.

Duncanprice has a nice synopse here:http://www.rebreatherworld.com/surfa...ght=bio-diesel

Re: Sorb- Reduce, Reuse, Recycle?

Used lime is thrown on my grass. My grass doesn't care too much, but weeds and moss perish. The bottom line is that the grass benefits from the latter effect...

Re: Sorb- Reduce, Reuse, Recycle?

Also found out old sorb could be used to make "limewater" for your seawater reef tank - case you need to see reefs and fish 24 x 7.

To damn sensitive. If it is not completely used up (and it shouldn't!!) then it will make te water caustic. Not a good idea unless you do that on purpose to compensate for sour excretions and in the exact right quantity.
