![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | The Kepler rebreather cartridge. Best in test. Kepler has the best design of a rebreather cartridge you will ever find. As its nearly Christmas (and I will be overseas working) I thought a little festive approach to rebreather design might be in order. In order to better digitally map the canister duration, and give a better mathmatical model of duration spiking and breakthrough I have always incorporated the work of Johannes Kepler. 1571-1630 http://www.hps.cam.ac.uk/starry/kepler.html The significance of Keplers work started in astronomy and his interest in the mathmatical and geometric proportions of space between the planets and there harmonic relationships. Keplers 1st therory was (quote) a mathmatical 'hypothesis' of space with the physically true universe (the Copernican one) and that humans were endowed by God with geometric and harmonic intuitions to find it. In the Mystery of the Universe (1596), Kepler related one of his earliest discoveries that he could derive the number and arrangement of the planets from the fact that there were five regular polyhedra. Kepler further went on to develop this theory of space between regular and iregular objects. Coins for example on a table in 2D can only be arranged in two shapes. The contact points between the discs where they touch each other is known as the “kissing point” When using spheres, balls or oranges the same kissing points apply on a single layer, however when a second layer of spheres are added futher “kissing” points are added dependent on the diameter of the spheres, and again the arrangement of the shape is only possible in fixed geometries as is the number of kissing points. When related to rebreather cartridge packing the interest should be as much the space between the individual grains to lower the WOB, against the amount of chemical packed to ensure duration, and the contact points to reduce spiking (high C02 tracking through the points of least resistance) Non of this is achieved by ramming the heck out of the canister, or bashing the sides for hours while cramming in the last drop of lime, you wont and you cant, if you wish to get more lime into the canister you need Keplers theory of close packing for the densest possible pack. Finding the densest packing of spheres is known as the Kepler problem. In keeping with the festive season Kepler worked on the snowflake, and found that they assemble in the most efficient arrangement, This geometrical order of hexagons and mathematical lattices are in fact atomic crystal structures but no one told him that in 1611. He also found that “snowflake packing” was the most efficient way to pack oranges in a barrel, and would have found it to be the most effective method of packing lime in a rebreather. Sadly no one told him that either. Bringing the story up to date Ian Stewart a professor of mathmattics at University of Warwick wrote an interesting book on snowflake packing and geometrical lattices called "Does God Play Dice?" (Penguin 1989). I have considered this and can tell you without a shadow of doubt he does not. God only snowflake packs. Especially at Christmas. Iain Middlebrook. Poor you don’t expect any simpathy, I’m off on that navy project they wont let you near because of where you were last (if you get my drift), tell me how many UK passports can you have at a time? This time it’s a taxi from the airport and a 5* hotel on the beach, you know hard work. As the heathans don’t celibrate Christmas I will assume the usual pork roast on the beach. |
