Winter is coming - storing sorb

I was reading on a friends DiveSorb, that it could be stored in -30dgr C.
But I think the Molecular Products says non-freezing temperature?

Anyone care to explain why such a large discrepency can exist? Is it only that Molecular has not tested, and therefor does not provide any data belwo 0dgr C?

As you can tell I'm fishing for way to store consumables in sub-zero conditions - if needed I'll change to the right sorbs.....
For now I'll just keep the sorb indoor, but is not very practical.

So how many sorbs tolerate freezing, and what causes the breakdown on the ones that don't?

HOw about the rest of the Rebreather -> especially the cells?

regards
Nicolai

I live in the UK and -5 is about all we would expect in side the garage. I put my sorb on wood blocks 2" (50mm of he floor) and i have a 50mm thick sheet of polystyrene between the drum and external wall. I then use a single oil filled radiator to heat the garage to above freezing.

So far so good.

Molecular Products Ltd are on this site with that username - why not ask them?

Last winter I stored my unopened kegs of lime in the shed (-5). Once opened, I keep the keg indoors. As Mark said, so far so good

Re: Winter is coming - storing sorb

I'd imagine that as soon as they have been opened (if not before) they have some moisture in them, as there is moisture in the air. This moisture could penitrate the sorb and then once frozen, will damage the structure of the sorb.

I thought about heating my garage with an oil filled radiator but its not very well insulated so I just brought my sorb indoors, stored under the stairs in my house.

Re: Winter is coming - storing sorb

My understanding was that the lime has a specific moisture content. Anything that changes that content damages the lime. Heat and cold can dry out your lime.

Re: Winter is coming - storing sorb

My experience is that cells don't like sub-zero storage.

I use Draegrsorb and have never had an issue with it. It is stored in the shed. In a cold winter we may see -25C on occasion. Just make sure the cannister and sorb charge are warm before the dive. This takes 4 or more hours for a couple of kilo in the cannister.

I have found that to do a dive to 40 mfw with a unit left in the boot overnight charged and ready in 0 C conditions is really not a bright idea.

My lowly kegs of 'sorb have been stacked in a designated a spot in "the dive closet" which is past the assortment of cylinders, pelican cases and dive equipment roller bags further down the hallway.

My CCR is currently allowed to peacefully reside on the glass kitchen table, having full surveillance of the room through the tabletop below, in a time honored harbormouth pattern to ward off any surprise attack from fast approaching dust bunnies.
