Re: Sofno / Rebreather Sorb in the USA

sorb is also available via Welcome To Divers Supply Inc.

they offer equip for the commercial industry primarily, but sell to everyone. Looks like just 4-8 on their site, but I'm sure they can get 8-12

I buy lots of odds and ends through them...price is right, and quick turn around

Re: Sofno / Rebreather Sorb in the USA

I've checked with Divers Supply, Inc. before and if I remember right they don't carry 8-12. I guess it's not commonly used in commerical operations.

Re: Sofno / Rebreather Sorb in the USA

The WR Grace Sodasorb is a viable alternative to Sofnolime and it's much cheaper... They have the 6-12 mesh (sofnolime 797 is 8-12 mesh but it works about the same.) The APD rep told me just derate the scrubber duration by an hour if you use Sodasorb and make sure you meticulously follow all the dust control recommendations when filling the canister, but the Steam Machines people told me its only about 3% less efficient and a tiny bit softer so derating by 25% to 33% seems overly conservative. It's sold by Steam Machines (make the prism rebreather) A 37 lb pail is $99 plus shipping (UPS.com says it would be $26 to Florida from TN) and they'll sell it to you directly if you call them up and order it.

If you can find a local dealer that stocks it at $99 that gets the cost of a 5lb scrubber load down to $13.50 for Sodasorb vs $21 for Sofnolime. But if you have to order it delivered, then it becomes $17 vs $21.

Unfortunatley, there is almost nobody in the country that stocks it because there is no profit it (the dealer price is such that by the time you pay shipping the cost is pretty much back to the retail price), essentially the only places that have it are the handful of shops that buy it to support their own Prisms. Incredibly, there are no Sodasorb dealers in Florida! I looked closely at stocking it as a lower cost alternative to Sofnolime, but it just didn't make business sense... which it why they have no dealers in Florida... BUT it is cheaper, you just have to plan ahead a few days and order what you need from Steam Machines...

Re: Sofno / Rebreather Sorb in the USA

Maybe the APD guy was confused an thought you were using 4/8 Sodasorb? That would make more sense.

I have ordered Sodasorb 4/8 from Oxycheq in FL, Going Under Dive Center in MN, and from Diver's Supply in LA and had good luck with all suppliers.

I now use Sofnolime 8/12 from Dive Rite Express, my local dive shop. I switched to Sofnolime because the grace stuff is too dusty.

Yes, I bet it's very likely he assumed I was using the larger grain stuff! And it's easier to find as well, as you point out the larger stuff is a bit more widely available.

Re: sorb

I moved these posts here to keep the original topic on track, but a reminder we only allow links to commercial operations that are sponsors.

No free advertising and benefiting from the community if the company doesnt support it.

Thanks
