Undressing The rEvo

One great thing about a set of doubles with a backplate is that you could remove the BP and wings for ease of cleaning, storage and travel. This is true of some other CCR units out there and is one of the few things I don’t like about the rEvo. The bolts holding the wing and split BP are not captured and the only way to remove and re-install the wing/BP is to remove the cover from the rEvo case. This is not trivial, as anyone who has done it can tell you.

A solution to this is to tack the bolts to the rEvo case cover and replace the bottom plate nuts with wing nuts and the top plate nuts with nylocks (the bolts are M8 x 1.25). This is exactly what I did and it allows for quick removal of the BP/wings for ease of cleaning and reduces weight of the unit for travel. My trip to Hawaii had the rEvo and a 9 lb case at 50 lbs – I barely made it and with the airline restrictions on checked baggage getting stricter every year, the ability to remove the wing/BP gives me more options. It also allows me to clean the wing out easier since I don’t have to handle the entire rEvo unit.

Here are some pictures of the “Undressing of The rEvo”:

Very good idea, thanks for sharing the information and I totally agree with what you did and why you did.

I guess I need to strip my rEvo naked also, and depending on your gender, a person would decide weather your rEvo is a she or a he which makes it a little more exciting.

Off to the welder I go .

Yes, I was hoping for more "tacking" and less "bead laying" on the job. But it works fine. Cosmetically, it leaves a little to be desired and there is some warping of the plate. So if anyone goes does this, make sure you do it on an Al table and don't run long beads!

Re: Undressing The rEvo

Having "fixed" studs that allow removal of the backplate, CL's and harness by spinning off two wing nuts was the main goal of these two kits, for the Evo and Inspiration.

https://www.deepseasupply.com/index.php?product=110

https://www.deepseasupply.com/index.php?product=123

It is much easier to service the machine if you can easily strip off the plate, harness, and CL's.

Every Rebreather I've stripped the BC and harness off of had a 1/2 cup of sand in it, because it is such a chore to tear down.

I would imagine a pretty simple kit could be made to provide the same functionality for the rEvo, by this I mean a set of threaded plates that make the stock studs "fixed" but also removable and replaceable if required.

Hey Tobin,

I'll glady do some beta-testing for you if you want. I can bring my rEvo up for you to check out as well - I head up north (from San Diego) every now and then. PM me if you're interested.

Thanks,
Paul

Re: Undressing The rEvo

Thats a nice bit of mod there. did you take the guts out, or weld it with em in? any problems with that? heat?

alos you have one crotch strap only? do you use the split straps like stock anymore? if so how do you rig them? are they part of that oms deal??

hey if anybody comes up with a plate that replaces welding, i want one.

You have to take the panel off the unit that the thru bolts are attached to. The welding is done from the bolt head side which is inside the unit and is up against the counterlungs. If you try to weld from the exposed side you will melt the counterlungs which would not be a good thing.

I am going to have mine done today.

for the mini it is not an item, but for the standard there are different positions possible for the bolts: so be sure you have it right before you start welding :-)
