scrubber use

I was thinking:

I do 1 one hour dive a week. Between dives I seal the scrubber cartridges in an plastic bag or tupperware box.
Before dive 3 I put the bottom cartridge in the top, refill the former top-cartridge (it's has done 2 hours) and put it in the bottom.

At dive 4 the scrubber cartridge (now in top) is almost 4 weeks old (after first packing)

Is this safe?

Or in other words: How long is it safe to use scrubber after first use?

I don't want to take unnecessary risks, bus I don't want to waste scrubber as well..

Re: scrubber use

Hi,

I dived yesterday with a scrubber that was used last time at the end of august. As I still have time on it, I will use it next sunday. And of course the lower cassette will go in the upper position.
I made a test and used a scrubber that was 6 months old. I was breathing in my sofa and did not get any symptom of headache. But I must confess that the taste was awful ! And I wouldn't have used it underwater.

there is no exact data available about scrubber lifetime, once packed.
that is the reason to be carefull
rEvo recommends to take fresh sorb if it has been packed and used partially more than a week ago... why, because we don't know if there could be decrease in performance

we do know that people use sorb.. many weeks, even months after first packing: they make sure that the casettes are sealed carefully..

at the end, don't risk your life for a few euro's/dollars/pounds...

(specially if you can buy it so cheap from Rebreather World shop :-)

regards

paul

Re: scrubber use

I often use without problem sorb which have been packed since weeks or months and carrfully sealed.
But I've encounted heavy hypercapnia with sorb which have been never used but stored a week unsealed in a room with low humidity and petrol stove.

Re: scrubber use

Hmmmm -- I think as long as you store your scrubber in an air tight enclosure (bag, box...whatever) it shouldnt matter how long you go between dives...in theory that is. If the elements that cause sorb to expire are not present, it shouldn't matter how long you store it. Is there a difference between storing a packed scrubber for a month and storing your unused sorb for a month? Both are in an air tight container.

In the end though it's your life vs. a few bucks in slughtly used sorb.

Re: scrubber use

And what about diving with only one fresh packed cartridge for like say one hour (and the other one empty)

well this is what happens:

testing according to CE: 40m depth, 1.6L CO2/min, 4 celcius, 40l/min gasflow

breaktrough (CO2 > 0.005 bar) after 142 minutes ( better then the inspo .... if we can believe the test is done correct)
with only one scrubber placed: breaktrough after.... 41 minutes :-)

so the rule is: ALWAYS dive with 2 filled scrubber cassettes

Hi PAul,

Does this mean that the rEvo has been in an ANSTI-machine?
If so can you publish more results?

Onething: The results above indicates that a little CO2 is scubbed in the secondary after relatively short time. I know theres some margin due to divers not staying long at that depth, and not working so hard, but would it make any sense to invert the secondary scrubber ( or primary) to ensure the gas-path has the same direction through the scrubbers at all times?

BTW: My inflatorhose is leaking (very little) at the 1st. stage
CAn you quote me a new one - or is it standard length?

Nicolai
