I'm taking the picture :-) .... paul ... one more reason to do deep again on already used scrubber in warm water: use of trimix for deep dives increases scrubber efficiency, compared to air diluent for the same depth Yes Paul, but who would ever use air dil for a 90M dive? Is it as easy as comparing the gas densities to be sure of scrubber performance on deeper dives? And given the lack of 3rd party testing of most scrubbers, how many of those few tests were done with HE? This does have me thinking more. Another possible benefit of a CO2 monitor beside detecting rising CO2 levels might be the potential to monitor scrubber capacity as it regards CO2 absorbtion. If your CO2 monitor/computer measures CO2 levels yet also knows your dil, how many hrs are on your scrubber, the mesh size and the O2 consumption, it might reasonably estimate how much CO2 has been absorbed and thus give a much more accurate estimate of how much time you have left before the CO2 level starts to run away. Make sense? -Andy |

And given the lack of 3rd party testing of most scrubbers, how many of those few tests were done with HE? So, you are suggesting that instead of post scrubber monitoring that pre scrubber monitoring is applied with correlation to dil/pressure/time to give a computed best guess to scrubber efficacy? This does have me thinking more. Another possible benefit of a CO2 monitor beside detecting rising CO2 levels might be the potential to monitor scrubber capacity as it regards CO2 absorbtion. If your CO2 monitor/computer measures CO2 levels yet also knows your dil, how many hrs are on your scrubber, the mesh size and the O2 consumption, it might reasonably estimate how much CO2 has been absorbed and thus give a much more accurate estimate of how much time you have left before the CO2 level starts to run away. Make sense? -Andy Assuming that you take into account tidal volume and how the scrubber was packed/type of granule/etc, that would theoretically be quite good. Not bang on but a good indicator. A problem I see is the reference in EN14143 with regard to CO2 monitoring. The standard only takes into account inspired CO2 and not the potential for scrubber breakthrough. This means that the value of developing this particular system is reduced. Now, thats not to say it has no value, because it has. Just that the standard is not written in respect to the problem, just a symptom. Incorrect IMHO. I certainly think this would be a more effective use of a stable CO2 monitor in a Rebreather that one which tells you when your already screwed. Conversely, it could be rightly argued that with so many variables, that it might not be of such accuracy to make it usefull beyond that of the current temperature systems and common sense. Brent p.s., sorry for the off topic. Perhaps this should be split/moved to the scrubber section as it is a good point to discuss.
