Sock puppets

Yes yes yes, people should be using their own names of course.

But remember - some people on here do have other accounts and they don't post from the spare account. I could not get into my main account (this one) and still needed to pm people so I made a second account, which I have never posted from.

If you need to hide behind an alias or another account then you haven't got the balls to say stuff openly and those accounts should be banned. But I need that second account to be active so I can get the PMs out of it as there is detail in there about a rebreather I need!!

Maybe I was wrong and this thread was not aimed at me, I just assumed it was! There must be other people on this board then posting from alias or sock puppet accounts. This is my ONLY posting account.

So, I stayed up drinking all night on both Fri and Sat night with the money I saved from not buying any crap dive gear at the show!

IMHO it´s called ´harsh but technically not completely warranted´

Some reasons the IP may sometimes be misleading include:

Using ADSL (with my provider) one gets a new IP every couple of hours. The range is limited, therefore another, legit user will get my current IP at a certain time.
Sitting in my company due to NAT I share something like 100 outside IPs with 100k colleagues, necessarily there will be occasional two legit Rebreather World users per one IP.
Shared computers e.g. in Internetcafés at popular divesites, diveclubs etc. will even share the cookies, browser-signature and so on

Working occasionally as computer forensic expert with the local police and court, quite a large part of my work is to prevent people jumping to conclusions from IP-addresses and other network-generated traces....

There are people and IPs where sock-puppeteering has occurred repeatedly.
They have been warned, so banning the IP isn't overly harsh.

If anyone looses access because they share an IP or the like they can always
send us an e-mail and we'll work it out.
